Guest guest
I've been a vegetarian for 40 years (since 1969) now, and my own mother would not accept my vegetarianism for at least 10 years or more. She would put bacon in the green beans then fish it out. She would use chicken broth in dishes without telling me. I cannot tell you how many days after her meals I would have gastric distress. I just don't have the bacteria in my gut any more to digest meat or meat by products. If I have questions about any food I just avoid it altogether. I hate potlucks, they give me diarrhea almost every time. I avoid them now or just eat what I brought. People just don't understand. They say " just take the meat off " or " eat around the meat " . HAH. They haven't had to suffer others cooking like I have. It's like getting salmonella again and again. 10 minutes of eating cause 2 days of suffering. I like my wifes' cooking or mine. I know what is in it. You can tell by looking at my Santa Claus belly. " Tuit Vorous! " = latin = Watch what you eat! Tom

When someone stops eating meat, their bodies usually stop producing the very specific enzymes that the body needs to digest the meat. Why waste the energy if it isn't needed? So if they only eat it on rare occasion, like at potlucks, their body can't digest the animal protein. Gut flora composition, on the other hand, typically isn't strongly impacted by going off of meat unless you also go on a very strict whole foods diet that contains nothing processed and no sugars at the same time.
