Guest guest
It is a whole lot easier than hickory nuts I promise you. It is a gift to your family and you can pick walnut out of a cracked one, fairly easy and is a good size nut meat. We made it a family pow wow time of talking and it's not so bad when several of you are doing it. Remember the quilting bee's that bonded folks together in friendship. You must like you some walnuts. --- On Fri, 9/19/08, wwjd <jtwigg wrote: wwjd <jtwigg Black Walnuts " vegetarian_ group " Friday, September 19, 2008, 6:05 PM We had a black walnut tree in our yard, when I was growing up. To get off the green hull, we would put a big pile of them on the drive way and drive back on and forth over them with our car. Then leave them a few days to dry out the green part. Put them in a bucket, set up a chair beside a cut log, that is cut side up and down, about 3 ft tall, and get a hammer. We would then pull off any remaining green hull and hammer then, to crack them open, on the cut log. We set up an empty dishpan or bucket on the other side of us and dropped them into it, to shell out after we were finished cracking that batch of nuts. Freeze them, so they won't go rancid on you. They are way to good to let that happen to them. Chopped up Black walnuts are so good in loaves, patties, cookies, etc.... I prefer them to English Walnuts. Enjoy, Judy

Guest guest
I used to have hickory trees when I lived in Athens, Texas....about 60 miles west from where we live now. I was so excited when I first discovered there were hickory trees. The nuts are just the devil to crack and get the nut meat out as these dang black walnuts but at least the hull usually fell off by itself and the hickory nuts were not as hard to get to as the black walnuts. I love the smooth outer texture of the hickory shell. And, I love the taste of hickory nuts....not as distinctive as a black walnut but very, very good. I used to put the hickory nuts in the freezer......then take them out and crack them with a hammer.....still takes a long time to get the nut meats out though. I wish I still had just one hickory tree. We have this really huge, really old black walnut which is right outside out back fence.....and then we have a huge papershell pecan out in the woods behind the fire station....which butts right up against our land. I have a pecan picker-upper gadget....don't know what the real name is.....that I found at a garage sale that makes picking up pecans so easy. I love history.....so when I think of hickory nuts, I think of President Andrew Jackson also known as " Old Hickory " .....one of the reasons I always remembered who he was on tests in grade school!!
