Guest guest
I never tasted hickory nuts until I was an adult. My (then) boyfriend (now my DH)'s grandmother would gather hickory nuts every year and take the nut pieces out, then she'd make the most WONDERFUL hickory-nut pies! These pies were made with the same recipe that one would use for a pecan pie, but the hickory nuts gave it a unique and very lovely flavor. She is the only person I ever knew who made those kind of pies and, sadly, I can't even make a decent pecan pie--and it is my DH's favorite. However, I think if he were given the choice, DH would choose hickory nut pie over his beloved pecan pie any time! They are SOOOO GOOOOD!!! Another thing DH's grandma made with the hickory nuts was a batch of " party mix " with hickory nuts in it. She put small pretzels, " Chex " cereals, ....something else I can't remember--it might have been dry-roasted peanuts (?) Oh yeah, and Cheerios, too--and a " flavoring mixture " of something like butter (or margarine), seasoned salt, worchestershire sauce, maybe some garlic powder or something similar...and it was very simple but really a treat to get some of her " party mix " to munch on! The hickory nuts really added a surprising " punch " to the flavor-mix! --Laura B., in Illinois.
