Hey, has anyone ever made pie crust from anything other than Crisco? I love to

bake pies but

hate using hydrogenated vegetable oil and would love to find a healthier

alternative.

I started making my pie crust with oil in 1980 after my father had a heart

attack.  I now use Enova or canola oil.  When you mix it up you will swear it is

not going to work, but have faith.  It will bake up just fine.  This was my

mother's recipe

Pie Crust (with oil)

Makes 1 crust

1 cup + 2 tablespoons flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/3 cup vegetable oil

2 tablespoons cold water

Mix flour, salt, and oil with a fork.

Add water and mix.  If too dry, add more oil.

Flatten ball of dough between 2 sheets of wax paper, rolling it out to the size

you desire.

Peel off top sheet of wax paper.  Invert your pie plate over the dough and flip

the dough into the plate as you turn it back over.  After centering the dough in

the plate as much as possible, carefully peel the wax paper off of the dough.

Finish fitting the dough into the plate.

If you need a prebaked crust, bake at 325 degrees until browned.

Otherwise, add filling.  If you want a top crust, repeat the recipe, invert over

filling, centering as needed, peel the wax paper off, and crimp.  Bake at 425

degrees until filling is done and crust is browned.

My grandmother used a slightly different recipe for her 2 crust pies.

Pie Crust (with oil)

Makes 2 crusts

1 1/2 cups flour

1/2 cup oil

3 tablespoons water

3/4 teaspoon salt

Mix ingredients together.  Flatten between 2 sheets of wax paper.

If you go to the recipes files, inside the dessert folder there is a pie & pie

crust folder.

The seed is in bloom, will it meet an early doom

or survive in a tranquil sea?

Does it face an early end, will it find a real friend,

should it be called humanity?

Will creation of man bring death by his hand

or will life be his destiny?

Now available in some supermarkets, check it out, non-hydrogenated shortening,

made with palm oil.  It is just like regular shortening!  Check out some of the

store brands, this is what they have at our local supermarket called Cash Wise,

a.k.a Coborn's in other parts of the country.

Also, you can get palm oil in international markets, specifically African

markets. the kind they sell is usually orange.

I love to use coconut oil, especially for coconut cream pie!  I use about

half/half palm.
