Guest guest
Yes, I make my crust with refrigerated coconut oil. I have been using this for years and my Momma who is by all definitions a Southern Belle, loves the way the crust tastes. (It was a stretch to get her to move from lard to Crisco but now she has started using the coconut oil too- PROGRESS!) Sometimes I will mix butter and coconut oil to make my crusts depending on my mood but for potpies, and hand pies and even our family's favorite Sweet Potatoe Pie, the coconut oil works very well. Just make sure it is refrigerated and use a chilled pastry cutter and a chilled work surface so that the oil doesn't melt down and ruin the flakiness of the crust. What types of yummy fillings do you put in your pies? Andrea
Guest guest
Thanks everyone, I will do some experimenting. The coconut oil one sounds really interesting! Does it make the crust taste like coconut? -Jess
Guest guest
I use butter, cold from the fridge. It handles better for me than shortening ever did, but that could just be me. :-) -ginger
Guest guest
Iced cold unsalted butter makes the best crust. Since I only eat one piece I don't worry about the trans fat.
