Guest guest
I was the typical Catholic school girl who broke free in public high school. Though, I still was tame compared to the things I saw around me If my parents only knew how easy they really had it! HA! Some how I think they may disagree with me... My band dork friends kept me on the straight and narrow for the most part. Cassie
Guest guest
Being in the band doesn't mean you have to be a " dork " or be in trouble. In our small school, about 150 high school students with a total school population of about 500 from the 3 year old Head Start babies to the 12th graders, our high school marching band is comprised of 7th through 12th grade students.....usually about 85 to 90 kids. The Carlisle High School Band has been earned a Sweepstakes rating for the past 11 years which means they made all 1's in all competitions throughout the year. They are also one of only two Texas 1-A High School Bands to earn the title of TSASSB's HONOR BAND for not just once but twice in a row in the 75 year history of the TSASSB. They only hold Honor Band try-outs every two years....and if you win that means you cannot try out the next time which means the winning school cannot try out again for 4 years. Carlisle won Honor Band in 2001 and in 2005.....and this summer our band director will be submitting a tape to the Honor Band Committee. We are hoping for a record breaking three in a row. When a 1-A high school band wins Honor Band in Texas that means that school is the best of approximately 250 bands that submit tapes. By the way, we have a fantastic drum line and it includes both boys and girls. Remember, Karen Carpenter was a drummer and a singer. Three of our daughters have been in Honor Bands at Carlisle and one, Sara, 20, our next to youngest daughter, was in both honor bands and our daughter, Amanda, now 24, was in the 2001 Honor Band and our youngest daughter, Ashley, 18, was in the 2005 Honor Band. Being in band AND being an outstanding musician can get you some nice scholarships for college like it did Amanda, Sara and Ashley. Sara was a three time All-State clarinet player and is majoring in Music Education at college now. Amanda is a graphic design department head at the company for which she works and Ashley is taking basics, including being on the SFA Color Guard with the marching band, still deciding what direction she wants to take her college education. My oldest son is a C.P.A., my younger son has his own car repair business, my oldest daughter is an elementary school teacher and next daughter has her own photography business. After having reared 7 children, who now range in age from 43 to 18, I think one of the secrets to keeping your kids out of trouble is to be very involved in their school careers both academically and in extracurricular activates as well. I see more and more parents who don't come to school to participate in activaties....who never serve on a committee and who never see their child perform in anything and worst of all, who only want to be their child's friend. I have one thing to say to parents who take that attitude......your child will have many, many friends during their lifetime, but they will only have one mother and one father to be their parent and guide them to a happy, healthy, productive adulthood. That was my " job " and I took it seriously......and that is the kind of parents my grandchildren are getting today.............YES!! Nancy C. East Texas I also wanted to play the drums, but my mother is a FIRM believer in gender roles, and drumming is too Masculine for her taste. I played French Horn. Totally band dork, too!
