I guess this is off-topic, but I wanted to share with you my thoughts on this

television series that reaches millions of viewers.

Last night, on ABC, Desperate Housewives aired an episode where a previous " wild

child " conformed after college and is a vegetarian who allows her 6 year old son

to call her by her first name.

The entire segments including those characters is demeaning the vegetarian

choice- " don't you want him to have proper nutrition? "   I just watched the

grandmother trick her grandson into eating a hot dog.  She told him that when

little kids eat hot dogs they grow up big and become baseball players.  then eat

proceeded to eat it.  The claimed it tasted 'like tofu, but better. "

YUCK!

He then gets violently ill, throwing up at the dinner table.  Tell his mother

(by her first name) that he ate 2 hot dogs.  The grandmother cannot understand

why he got sick, thinking it was because she gave him the second one.  UGH!

Just had to share my disappointment with you all.  I will send something

positive in a bit :)

Major Disfuntional Families would be a better name for this show. LOL

Our family does watch this show. Disrespect for each other, on all levels,

permeates this show.

In my experience, vegetarians are demeaned. They do get sick if someone slip

them meat because they are not used to eating that. Just the other day, someone

had a derogatory Vegetarian t-shirt. All I saw was VEGETARIAN. I happily said,

" Are you vegetarian? " Then, he told me what his shirt had said. I told him I was

vegetarian. People have given my brother meat hamburger when he has ordered

veggie burgers. I find myself checking that. It probably isn't alot of people,

but the people that do it are noticable even after all these years with so many

of us out there!

It's sad that in today's society not even Vegetarianism is safe. I was

asked to lunch by my husbands boss and although she is so sweet I didn't

know what to say. She picked a noodle house that doesn't have a vegetarian

menu. The only thing I can have there are the eggrolls. I accepted and

suggested a Chinese place next door, they have food I can have.

I am very happy with my choice and I won't make changes just to be nice.

I'm committed.

My husband and I saw the show as well (while we rarely tend to watch

TV, Desperate Housewives and Numbers are our weekly guilty pleasures)

and were disappointed by how condescending the show portrayed

vegetarians. Our family is vegetarian with two young kids (who

certainly do not refer to us by our first names) and it's just too bad

that vegetarians are perceived as being unhealthy and unathletic by so

many. My son loves sports and my husband is becoming well-versed on

successful athletes who are vegetarian so he can counter the masses

that would tell our son that he can't be good at sports with a

vegetarian diet.

On the positive side, other mainstream medium occasionally run their

plugs on the pros of the vegetarian diet. Earlier in the afternoon, we

had extended family (none of whom are vegetarian) over for a meal and

(of course) served all vegetarian food, which everyone enjoyed.
