I've found Quorn!

Hi!

Well, I went out on a limb this past week and ordered a case (yes, a CASE)

of Quorn " grounds " , even though I tried several times to buy JUST ONE at a

couple of places near here that usually carry the products in stock.  Each time

I went, they were either " just out " or " the delivery truck hasn't come yet... "

Rather than waiting, I took the gamble and ordered the case order of it

from a woman at our local YMCA who orders in bulk from a large " natural/organic

products " catalog every month or so.  The order came in and the woman wanted to

try the Quorn, too, so she " bought " 3 of the packets from my case--I still had 9

packages of it.

I was VERY pleased with the product!  I made a vegetable soup last

night--just a little of everything in the fridge and it made some nice broth

with the vegetables and a packet of non-meat organic brown gravy I found I had

stashed in the cupboard.  Last of all, I added just a cup of the " grounds " and

heated it all together before my husband got home to have some supper.

My DH (husband) really loved the soup.  He asked me " what's in this?--NO!

DON'T tell me until after I've had seconds! "   (LOL!)  I waited and then, I did

tell him-- " It isn't beef and it isn't soy or 'tofu'! "   I even showed him the

rest of the package that I had put back in the freezer.  REALLY, for a package

of 12 oz., there is a LOT of volume in the package and it didn't seem

unreasonably priced.  The flavor is GOOD.  (Sorry, to the dedicated ones--I'm

not trying to be facetious, but it was a taste and texture like " real " b**f,

but, of course, it was not. And, no " gristle " --all the " good " and none bad.)

Even after I told DH what it was in the soup, he said emphatically that he

LIKED it a lot and enjoyed BOTH helpings he'd had.  *I* am totally sold on this,

too.  I'm really glad I got the large order, because I am thinking of making a

lot more things with it.

So, today, for the 5th time, I called the health food store in Springfield,

IL, where I had DH put in a " special order " for me last week--I wanted to also

try their " meat-balls " of the same flavor as the " grounds " .  They answered that

the delivery had not come, so the woman there made a separate order for me--I

guess I'm going to get a CASE (yes, a CASE--there is 10% discount for ordering a

case) of the m**t balls...which I have not tried yet.  If they are just as good

as the " grounds " , I know I will like them and I can make foods with them--DH

will also probably eat them willingly.  We are going at this one recipe and one

dish or meal at a time--not all at once, but it seems to be progress when we

find something we both agree on liking and can enjoy in our foods.

I have not yet tried the " turkey " Quorn, but that is on the horizon in the

near future.  I just wish they had a " patty " like the Boca-burgers with

Quorn--that would be a HUGE hit here at our house, I know!

My local grocery store gives me the same song and dance...they got

the Chik'in strips, not the meatballs and crumbles like I requested!

I don't really know how I would use the Chik'in strips or I would try

them.

You can put them in a stir fry, a Chinese Chik Salad, fajitas or toss with

grilled onions and made a hot sandwich.

Grab any of the pruducts and give them a try. I have not been

disappointed with anything yet.

I made a creamed noodle chil and veggie casserole with them. I don't

know where the recipe is. Was a version of as tuna casserole I found

online I believe and I subbed with the strips.

Me too! My local Ralph's has it.  First I tried the chicken nuggets. My kids

didn't like it because they said it was too spicy. They are like that!  I loved

them and ate the whole box  (over a week, LOL).  Yesterday, I bought more, and

branched out to the fried " chicken " patties. I am going to make sandwiches out

of them.  One of these days, I'll branch out to the other stuff..

There is a restaurant called The Veggie Grill that makes sandwiches and things

with incredible meat substitutes. I'll bet dollars to donuts they use Quorn.

Thanks to you all for the suggestion!!!

Grab a roast and try it for Thanksgiving.  You ca use the leftovers in dishes

and for sandwiches.

I only see them at Whole Foods and I get them early before they are sold out.

  • 2 weeks later...

You could use the chick'in strips in fajitas, your could bread then and make

them into nuggets, you could stir fry them with veggies and rice. These are

the first few things that come to mind.

Laura -- somehow I missed your original post! :( Glad you like it! They are

out a lot at my grocery store, too. I have a whole stack of naked chik'n

cutlet boxes in my freezer because I found them on sale, $3.99 a package at

HyVee, which is a great deal!

I am a huge fan of Quorn. My favorite product is the naked chik'n cutlets. I

put them in casseroles or on salads, they're great with taco salad, baked

with a little taco seasoning. Somebody on this list told me that she breaded

them and they were good that way, too -- that's on my list of things to make

for supper this week! :) I like the cutlets better than the strips, just a

personal preference.

The crumbles I thought were great -- the texture is better than soy,

definitely. Like Laura, I made soup with them and my non-veg neighbor

couldn't tell a difference!

I have a package of meatballs but haven't tried them yet. My aunt loves them

(and the teenage boy clerking at Whole Foods told me they're good!) She's

been vegetarian for 5+ years, but I was the one who introduced her to Quorn,

and she goes through the naked chik'n cutlets faster than I do! :) I never

cared for turkey so I haven't tried the quorn turkey roast, but my aunt

likes it better than tofurkey, which she has eaten for years.

They do have a chik'n patty like Boca and Morningstar farms make. One of my

local HyVees carries it. I haven't tried it.
