Guest guest
You can also use rock salt. You still might have to reseason, but sometimes you dont. I add a little vegetable oil with it. Sharon I work from home. You can too! DonnaLilacFlower <thelilacflower Monday, October 20, 2008 11:07:15 AM cast iron rusted pans Diana Used plenty of steel wool. Guest guest
I've only had the rock salt method work if there's a small moderate amount of rust. If you have a bad case of rust steel wool is perfect and even that takes a lot of rubbing. Guest guest
when my Dran passed I was given some of her pans that sat. A few were rusty and I was going to toss them. I searched the Net and I did try the rock salt and oil, didn't take much off. I got some steel wool and it did the trick. I did have to oil and season them again but it's been worth it. those are the best pans you can use. Kenia , diana scott <dianascot_33 wrote: > > Thank you all. Guest guest
Greetings: Ive read some of these posts of how to clean rusty iron pans. My thought may not fit , unless you live in a country area. The old way, when people used those pans on wood stoves, they would become very thick with grease, oil, ect. To clean them people would build a hot fire outside, and throw the pans in the fire, it would burn off all the impurities, when the pan came out of the fire it was clean. (this method would prob clean off the rust too. But, also, you do have to re-oil them. Guest guest
Thank you. Sounds like a good idea. I shall have to use my gas stove as burning is not allowed where I live, so shall scour first. Guest guest
I had to give you my two cent worth. Get a stainless steel sponge, You can ask any restaurant pot and pan guy what it is... Then get some OIL!. Vegetable OIL...Not soap, not salt. Not Acid from lemons or lime. Oil... Then, get to work....The oil will lift the rust and give you a fighting chance at seasoning the cast iron... By the way, if you can't get all the rust out...not to worry, it will not hurt you in any way...You will still be able to cook with the cast iron. There may be some discoloring, but that will go away... Good luck,,, Chef , mrs.fabulous wrote: > > I use coarse salt and lemon/lime halves and scrub, scrub, SCRUB! > Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile > > > " DonnaLilacFlower " <thelilacflower > > Mon, 20 Oct 2008 15:07:15 > > cast iron rusted pans Diana > > > Used plenty of steel wool. Guest guest
Thank you. This sounds like the easiest suggestion. I'm glad to know that I can use it even with the rust. Guest guest
Thank you. I'm trying to go with cast iron and stainless steel pots and pans. I think there is enough evidence that they are healthier. Guest guest
so i just happen to have a really badly rusted iron skillet, in fact i have 2 of them. i had someone living with me for a couple of months, what she didn't like she would put outside, since i wasn't here most of the time i didn't know what went outside. she is long gone now but i have to clean up the things left behind. 2 of them being those iron skillets. so i'm taking the skillets to my sister's garage where my b-i-l will use the sander on it to get most of the rust off, the thing has been setting in the rain and wet and such for several months. then after most of the rust is gone, i'll just oil the thing, bake it again for an hour or so. then it's ready to be put back into use? thanks for all the posts on this subject. hm **************Plan your next getaway with AOL Travel.
