Guest guest
RE: Question of the week: What restaurants have vegetarian foods...? If any of you are ever near the University of Illinois campus in Urbana, Illinois, there is a cool little place that only has lunch (I think there is an evening meal on certain days) during the week-days, is only open during the school year--but it serves vegetarian/vegan food only. It's a funky little place in the basement level of a large, old house --you have to enter thru the " back door " and go down the stairs to get to it. Looks like a kinda " hippy place " --very informal, and university students often are regular customers. The staff is (so I've heard) mostly volunteer--kind of a co-operative enterprise. They serve a limited menu that changes daily and it's all vegetarian, usually completely vegan, and most of the time " natural and organic " and, when possible, local food. I used to live close enough to go to Urbana (and the adjacent city of Champaign) fairly often. I've eaten at the Red Herring Coffee House in Urbana at least twice. The food is GOOD. This is the place to go if you have doubts that vegetarian food can be tasty and satisfying. I've provided here a link to more information about the Red Herring. If you read the reviews on the page, just know that " Chambana " is a squishing of " Champaign " and " Urbana " , Urbana being where the restaurant is located, but Champaign is the conjoined-twin city that flows into and out of Urbana--you hardly know where one ends and the other begins! Also, in the review that mentions " other local restaurants on the Nevada-Oregon circuit " , they're talking about the STREETS named " Oregon " and " Nevada " --the Red Herring is between those 2 streets on South Lincoln Ave. in Urbana. It has a strange atmosphere, but really good food--not too expensive, either! Good and vegetarian! Heres' one of the links from Google: http://www.yelp.com/biz/red-herring-vegetarian-restaurant-urbana Best regards, --Laura B., from Illinois (unfortunately, we've moved too far away to get to this place very often!)
