I think vegetarian does not mean vegetable eater.  It means you don't eat meat.

Why on earth wouldn't you eat breads  & such??  Unless there's meat involved, of

course.

fattning!I dont want to be a 3oo pound vegetarian, defeats the health factor part

of it!As always, thank you for all the opinions!

I eat lots of carbs.  Mostly complex carbs and I eat a ton of vegetables too.

I hardly fear being over 300 lbs.  and if someone is 300 lbs there's more

to love

I'm not a nutritionist and I know everyone is different, but I don't think that

'too many carbs' should be a concern for vegetarians who are eating a lot of

grains, fresh veggies, fruits, beans and other good sources and variety of

proteins, and of course, enough water.

My serving size for grains is usually about 1/4 cup, rice 1/2 cup, but right

along side that is some fruit, sprouts or whatever my body is telling me I need

at the time.

This morning I needed a 1/2 cup of brown rice with some maple syrup, some okara

hot sausage-spiced patties AND a little tofu scramble with all the leftover

veggies in my fridge (i was hungry :)

i must be doing something right, i'm losing about a pound week, and I eat a LOT

of grains, especially brown rice, i love the stuff almost as much as i love

chocolate!

At the very moment i'm nibbling on a piece of dark chocolate and drinking some

barley tea (thanks donna!)

Have a great day all,

Pete

Carbs are not " fattening " They have calories just like anything, and too

many of those calories are bad for us. Breads/grains have no fat at all

except what you put on/cook them in. Carbs are a great energy source, but

stick to complex ones.

I am taking a nutrition class right now and was surprised to learn

that you are supposed to get MOST of your energy from carbs - even if

you are a meat eater. The key is that you should try to eat whole

grains and complex carbs (instead of simple carbs and sugar). These

turn into sugar slowly and actually help keep your blood sugar stable.

I was also surprised to learn that if you don't get enough carbs, you

body will start stealing from your muscles - even if you have plenty

of fat on your body!

That's why low carb dieters lose weight; their bodies metabolize muscle

tissue and shed water, leaving all the bad fat behind to further slow the

metabolism.
