Guest guest
Tonight for dinner the kids and I went to Subway. I asked the person waiting on us if he could either make mine first or make the kids and then change his gloves as he would be touching meat for the kids. He asked me if I was alergic to meat and I told him that I didn't eat it and also didn't want it touching my food. He was fine with that, but the man behind me turned to me and said the I had chosen a very unhealthy way of eating. Now I weight over 200 lbs (unfortunately, am slowly loosing the excess), so I turned to him and said do I look unhealthy from eating that way. He shook his head and turned away. My little girl asked him if he knew why animals had protein in their meat. He shook his head again and she told him it was from eating all the greens, like the grass and leaves and things like that. Then she went on to say that her gramma just missed a step and ate the greens and veggies instead of the meat. I hadn't realized how much she was listening and taking in about why I had become a vegetarian. She said eating a ham sub was a treat for her but when we got home after taking a bite or two she took the ham off and gave it to her brother. She said she was too used to not having the meat that it tasted funny. She also told me that from now on she doesn't want to eat any meat either. Now she just has to tell that to her grampa (my ex) while she is on her weekend visit starting tomorrow. Guest guest
How Cool! I am sorry that ignorant man was there to challenge a stranger and listen to your conversation, but I bet you felt great when your little one put him in his place! LOL Knowledge is power, and she was on top of the world My daughter, 2.5, hates soy crumbles. She LOVES tofu and eggs (to me that has the same texture), but she never had ground be*f, so she has no frame of reference, nor does she feel like she needs to have an analogue in her food. I find it frustrating, as we don't really like beans in our spaghetti, and she seems to pick out the squash and zucc, too. But, I am fine with her being picky if it is to get some of the processed foods out of her diet. Best wishes, Cassie
Guest guest
Thank you for posting your story. I get so frustrated when people say that a vegetarian diet is unhealthy. Any diet can be unhealthy - and vegetarian diets are usually more healthy than non-vegetarian diets. I think people think that vegetarian diets are unhealthy because they think you have to eat meat to get enough protein. People are so mis-informed. One of the biggest questions people have asked me is, " how do you get enough protein? " I say, " umm, from vegetables... " Americans get more than enough protein on average. Your body only gets energy from carbs, fat, and protein. Out of these three things, the least amount of energy should come from protein. Too much protein can actually be bad for you - it has even been linked to colon cancer! Anyway, good for you and your daughter!
Guest guest
My granddaughter is nine and if this is the way that she has decided she will eat it is fine by me. She went to a meat bingo with her grandfather on Friday evening and won and ham. He said that he would cook it for her over the weekend and she told him to go ahead and cook it but to do lots of veggies also because she wouldn't be eating the ham just the veggies. Last evening when he dropped the kids off he commented on it and said wasn't I lucky I had managed to comvert another one. I told him that it was her choice not mine and she could eat whatever she wanted. She overheard us and told him that she didn't think it was right that an animal had to die so she could eat when there were so many other things that she could eat that didn't harm anything. I just smiled and gave her a hug and he just shrugged his shoulders and said to each his own and now he would have to purchase veggies and fruit for when she was at his house. To him veggies are mashed potatoes, canned corn or peas, pork and beans, canned carrots and peas, and sometimes sweet potato if someone else cooks it. We were married for 32 years and he never could understand why I cooked other veggies for myself and my children. Children are a wonderful thing and I am so happy that my little one is concerened about the environment and other living things.
