Guest guest
That is disappointing about not having good veg. hot dogs to try! I have nowhere to purchase the canned ones near me; I'd shy away from ordering a whole case of them unless I knew for sure I'd like them anyway. Several years ago, I made up a batch of a mixture of what I called " tofu seasonings " . Lots of different herbs, a number of spices, dried garlic powder, onion powder and so on...I wish with my whole heart that I had written it all down at the time! I used a version of this on little " logs " of very firm tofu and browned them in the skillet a bit--they tasted fairly close to " hot dog flavor " , I remember, and I actually put a couple of them in a bun with ketchup and mustard. I think the core flavors of this were some hickory smoke-flavored salt (used to be sold under the " Durkee " brand name, I believe, or another one came from the " Tone " spice/herb company. It also had some flavors of garlic and onion, predominating, with other herbs in lesser amounts. The " smoky-garlic-onion " seems to be a major flavor component of most hot dogs--the " regular " ones. We are transitioning, but I never buy hot dogs. Not only because they're really gross m**t products, but they are full of terrible added ingredients and not a bit healthy. However, I do confess that, about once every 8 months to a year or so, I actually get a hankering for " that " flavor. (And to eat it with a good chili or saurkraut on a bun!). I crave fried " Chee-tos " the same way--I LOVE how they taste, and HATE how they make me feel! I totally agree with the person who said here that they can make so many good [analog m**ts], I wonder why there are no good, really GOOD taste/textured meatless hotdogs out there? If anyone finds them, please pass the word on to the rest of us here! THANKS! Wondering, too! --Laura B.
