Guest guest
Hi Pete, I forget where I found this instant oatmeal recipe but it works well (I don't use as much water as it says). Original recipe called for 1/8 tsp salt per baggie but that's too much. For other grains what about cooking, portioning and freezing? Works ok with rice. Peace, Diane Ready Made Oatmeal Breakfasts 3 cups quick cooking oats salt 8 small sized zip baggies Put 1/2 cup oats in a blender and blend on high until powdery. Set aside in a small bowl, and repeat procedure with an additional 1/2 cup oats. If you're using a food processor, you can do the 1 cup of oats in one batch. Put the following ingredients into each zip baggie: 1/4 cup unpowdered oats, 2 Tbsp. powdered oats, and tiny pinch salt. Store in an airtight container. To serve: Empty packet into a bowl. Add 3/4 cup boiling water. Stir and let stand for 2 minutes. For thicker oatmeal, use less water - for thinner oatmeal, use more water Variations: Apple-Cinnamon Oatmeal To each packet add 1 Tbsp. sugar, 1/4 tsp. cinnamon, and 2 Tbsp. chopped dried apples. Sweetened Oatmeal To each packet add 1 Tbsp. sugar or 1 packet 'Equal' artificial sweetener. Brown Sugar/Cinnamon Oatmeal To each packet add 1 Tbsp. brown sugar & 1/4 tsp. cinnamon Oatmeal w/Raisins & Brown Sugar To each packet add 1 Tbsp. packed brown sugar and 1 Tbsp. raisins. Health Nut Oatmeal To each packet add 2 Tbsp. any kind of wheat germ Fruit & Cream Oatmeal To each packet add 1 Tbsp. non-dairy coffee creamer and 2 Tbsp. dried fruit Fun Fruit Oatmeal To each packet, add 6 or 7 pieces of 'fruit snack' type dehydrated fruit. Confetti Oatmeal To each packet, add 1 tsp. decorative cake/cookie sprinkles. , Pete Self <self.pete wrote: > > One line of products I haven't found yet is 'instant grains'... i eat grains nearly every m eal, and i have to say it gets old, it would be so nice to have single serve millet, barley, quoina... i have no idea how they would do it, maybe cook them, then dehydrate them or something, but it would be nice to have the convenience... no preservatives, throw it in boiling water and it's ready in 3 minutes or so
Guest guest
Hi Diane: Thanks a bunch! I'm going to try to freeze some and see how they turn out, but I also want to try to cook, then dehydrate some and see how that works out... i know it seems like a lot of trouble, but next year I plan on going on some long hiking trips and I don't want to miss out on healthy eats.... and it's nice to have my staple menu on hand when I go to my carnivore parents' house, so i can spend less time cooking and more time visiting kind of thing... i use a lot of different grains - it would be really nice in a power outage or on trips to have whatever i want rather than being limited to a few things. Guest guest
I make up baggies of quaker quick oats and a tiny pinch of salt like this to take to work. I don't use a blender for any of them, though -- just right out of the cannister. Hot water from the coffee maker, and I've got breakfast! Audrey S.
