I know of several people who have an allergy to tomatoes.  They are very

acidic.  Maybe that's the reason.  It's a vegan friendly condiment.

Just wanted to say a big Happy Thanksgiving and that I am very happy I

found this group! I am a new vegan and find this group so helpful. I

just saw a post for " un-tomatoe Ketchup " and was just wondering why no

tomatoes?? They are very good for you and I see no reason why you would

not want to use them in something. There are many vegan options out

there for ketchup so I was curious as to why there was a recipe posted

like that. Just curious, thats all, it left me wondering! Blessings and

I hope we inspire others to live a kind life this year and stand as

examples of compassion and respect to all of life, not just us humans!

Blessings,

Can't help but tell you that when my daughter was little, she didn't like cooked

tomatoes. She said she was allergic to them, but only when they are cooked. LOL!

Hahaha I have heard this in the opposite direction. My younger nephew would

cover everything with ketchup but would say he was allergic to sliced tomatoes.

Hope he got over it. My daughter is still a picky eater as are her children. She

also avoids cooking. Frozen veggies in a pot is her idea of cooking. My sons do

better in the kitchen. Go figure? My youngest son says that I never gave him any

ethnic foods when he was little. He would 't eat them! Now he eats very well and

loves Indian, Mexican, Ethiopian, Thai, and other foods. None of them are

vegetarians. I wasn't either until my husband had a heart attack. Then I got to

the point that if I ever saw another chicken breast I would scream! I started

eating vegetarian, and, amazingly, he did too - at home at least. When he went

out he was careful but did eat chicken, turkey, and pork tenderloin. Since he is

gone, I eat very simply when I'm alone. I especially love greens with onions and

garlic sauteed in a little olive oil. And sweet potatoes, SIGH - so good.

My dad can not eat raw tomatoes but cooked are fine. It took him a while

to figure it out.

Not only do raw tomatoes affect his rheumatoid arthritis, but they also

give him heart palpitations.

Cooking them even a little changes them enough where he can eat them.

I have the same issue with tomatoes. I'm flat out allergic to them, but I

can handle them fresh and raw better than cooked as long as I don't overdo

it. There for a while I couldn't handle cooked at all without breaking out

in hives and all kinds of other nasty symptoms. The worst symptom I've ever

gotten from raw is my tongue breaking out. Cooking them does change

something about them when you have allergies.

My dad can not eat raw tomatoes but cooked are fine.   It took  him a while

to figure it out.

Not only do raw tomatoes affect his rheumatoid arthritis,  but  they also

give him heart palpitations.

Cooking them even a little changes them enough where he can eat them.

I wonder why that is?  Could it be the nicotine in the tomatoes?  No,

really,

they do have it!   Tomatoes, eggplants, potatoes and peppers are all among the

plants of the nightshade family--same as tobacco, and they all contain varying

amounts of this chemical.

It's not a lot, of course, but I have joked a few times with my smoking

friends

(I don't smoke) that, if they wanted to quit, instead of " wearing the patch " or

chewing the gum, if they wanted to quit, maybe they could load up on a stew

of eggplant, potatoes, tomatoes and peppers.

I don't think the smokers have ever taken me up on that, but I've eaten some

really good stuff with those ingredients...and it's kind of addictive!  LOL!

The BEST " nicotine coctail " stew (that's what I call it) was a thick

concoction,

all-vegan, that was ladled over some pasta at the RED HERRING in Urbana, IL..,

on the U. of I. campus.  It's only open for noon (except Monday evenings) and

it's

literally a hole-in-the-wall sort of place (in the basement--via the back

stairs!).

Good food, and I highly recommend it, anyway--all vegetarian, usually vegan..

As for tomatoes...I also have a friend who says they " tear up her insides " .

My DH won't eat raw or cooked--unless they are pureed and he can't " see " the

shape of them.  He picks out the " chunks " of a chunky salsa or spaghetti sauce!

     Laura B.,

PS: I live in Illinois, but the BEST tomatoes come from Indiana, where I grew

up!

My mom is from the town that is now the headquarters and main canning plant for

" Red Gold " brand tomato products. Mom, at 79, always still cans her own " home

grown " tomatoes and refuses to buy " store-bought " ones!

Fresh tomatoes will sometimes give me canker sores. A little sugar on them

cuts the acid. Oranges occasionally do the same thing, for some reason

orange juice is the worst! Sometimes it doesn't matter what I eat, I get

them anyway -- stress. :(
