Guest guest
If anyone is looking for an alternative to powdered cows milk, we use Better Than Milk powdered milk. My son and I can't handle cows milk or powdered cows milk and the Better Than Milk brand is really good. In fact I used the BTM to make evaporated milk yesterday for the pumpkin pie. Evaporated milk is 1 1/2 cups water, 1 cup powdered milk and 2 Tbsp butter (or soy butter) whirled in a blender. No one knew that it was a handmade soy alterntive in the pumpkin pie and the pie is almost gone now. I get the BTM from Azure Standard. It's a mail order food coop. They have lots of organic foods and good prices. Michelle
Guest guest
Better than Milk is 5 stars in my pantry - i use it to make some quick milk, and i use it to make a sweetened condensed milk that is very reliable for pies and candies. This product is good stuff I'll try your 'evaporated milk' sub, thanks! Better than Milk Sweetened condensed milk 3/4 cups Better Than Milk brand powder 3/4 cups water Heat to just boiling In another pan, melt 5 Tablespoons of vegan margarine Toss in 1 1/2 cups sugar AFter the sugar starts to dissolve, add the milk pinch of salt Bring a gentle simmer for about 5 minutes Stir often Store in fridge for up to 5 days I've had this for a while, and found a reference the other day on the web, but can't find it now --- On Fri, 11/28/08, Michelle Dixon <Petagoatjunction wrote: Michelle Dixon <Petagoatjunction powdered soy milk Friday, November 28, 2008, 4:13 PM If anyone is looking for an alternative to powdered cows milk, we use Better Than Milk powdered milk. Guest guest
Thanks for the recipe. Sounds like it would be great in Thai Iced Tea. --- On Fri, 11/28/08, Pete Self <self.pete wrote: Pete Self <self.pete Re: powdered soy milk Friday, November 28, 2008, 12:06 PM Better than Milk is 5 stars in my pantry - i use it to make some quick milk, and i use it to make a sweetened condensed milk that is very reliable for pies and candies. Guest guest
Michelle, Thanks for this tip. We make our own soy milk, but every now and then it would be handy to have some powdered millk on hand. We do all our bulk ordering (beans, grains, flour, dog/cat food, chicken feed, garden amendments, etc., etc.) from Azure through our local food co- op. They have an amazing inventory and are always adding new things. ~ irene in rural western WA > I get the BTM from Azure Standard. It's a mail order food > coop.
