A year is what they recommend for the length to keep spices, but I've not had a problem with them loosing taste for much longer than that, especially whole spices, such as mustard seed, peppercorns, cardomon, cloves, etc. Keep them in closed up in sealed containers. Moisture will cause them to loose flavor quickly. We buy the large containers of spice/seasonings at Sam's Club for great prices and some of those last us over 2 years with no appreciative change in flavor.
