Hi Audrey,

I get it when I eat soy substitutes. I had some Quorn Ground one day,

and then had some Worthington FriChik on another day. Resulting in the

same kinda bitter aftertaste in my mouth that never goes away. I just

don't know what to do. Thanks for responding.

Hi Ann,

So you got it with the Quorn, as well (which is not soy)? I'd have to see

the list of ingredients to be sure, but I'm betting Worthington FriChik is

mostly TVP, maybe some soy. Do you start tasting it right after your meal,

or does it take a little while?

Go to our recipes and pick our some easy homemade burger recipes and try those.

Chances are it's your medication.  Quorn woould be the same as mushooms when it

comes to ingredients.  There is no soy in it.

There are plenty of easy bean burger recipes to try.

I've never had this happen and I eat a lot of different kinds.

I've never heard anyone mention having this happen before.

It just tastes great to us.

Maybe it's some kind of reaction with your medication, Ann -- that only

interacts with something in the meat substitutes? That's crummy! :(

You know sometimes this can be a reaction to preservatives or additives in

certain foods. I have horrible mouth reactions to MSG.

I don't' know what these products contain but we all know lots of this type

of thing is added to any premade foods. Even those we'd like to consider a

bit healthier.

By the way did anyone notice the HUGE jump in price for Morningstar

products? They went up almost $3 per box. Outrageous.

Good Morning Everyone,

I joined this group a few months ago, and this is my first post. Thank

you to all those who have shared so much information. I'm learning

things everyday. The reason for this post is to ask if anyone gets a

funny taste or after taste in their mouth after eating meat substitutes?

I'm in vegetarian groups with friends, I've been a long time veg and I

have never heard anyone say this before. I can't imagine what it could

be unless like you say, your medication.

The first time I tried seitan (from the refrigerated section) I

didn't care for it at all, and I remember it had a funny aftertaste.

That was several months ago and I'm afraid to try it again (and waste

the money on it). Maybe it's the same thing some of you are

experiencing, now I don't feel so " strange " (I'm very willing to try

almost anything!). I love quorn, soy/tofu/tempeh.

The only gluten/seitan product I've ever had a funny taste with, is the

Vegetable Steaks by Worthington. It is almost a metallic taste. I think it may

be some flavoring in the broth that it is cooked in. It may be this way with

the refrigerated product you bought. It may have nothing to do with it. You

might try rinsing it and see if that removes any flavor doesn't appeal to you.

The Worthington/Loma Linda choplets which is gluten slices doesn't taste

anything like this, nor does any of their other products. I don't even use egg

to bread them in Italian bread crumbs, but instead use the wet products from the

can(they all come in a thin broth in their can) and dip it into some Italian

bread crumbs that I've mixed with garlic salt and Ms.Dash. Then fry them up.

Or if using the choplets in a stir fry, just dry it off with paper towels and

dice up. Then I brown it in a little oil and sprinkle with Lawry's Seasoned

Salt or McKays Beef style seasoning(all vegetarian). Take it out of the pan

and stir fry your veggies(green pepper, broccoli, carrots, onions, celery,

mushrooms, yellow or zucchini squash, etc) and minced garlic and ground ginger.

When veggies are still tender crisp and bright in color, add back in the browned

diced choplets and add a little braggs amino's seasoning. Add some ground

cayenne pepper for a nice bite to it.

Enjoy,

Judy
