Guest guest
I found a cute cookie recipe that calls for a butterscotch candy in the middle. I have always just stayed away from hard candy, as I was never sure about the vegetarian-ness of them (if that is a word). Any input on this would be appreciated. Thanks, Cassie
Guest guest
to the best of my knowledge, hard candy is made of sugar, water, flavoring & coloring. Being vegetarian it would depend on what the flavoring & coloring is derived from. It would not be vegan because of the typically used white sugar unless a vegan sugar (maple syrup for example) is used. I hope this makes sense, is correct and helps! Have a great day, everyone! Guest guest
I found this: http://www.vegforlife.org/eats_candy'.htm ?? I didn't know that Boston Baked Beans were vegan, interesting! Dumb question probably, but... why is white sugar not vegan? Audrey S. Guest guest
White sugar is processed through bone char. If you buy organic white surgar you will notice it has a slightly brown tinge. Guest guest
Bone char, made from the bones of cows and other animals, is at times used to whiten sugar. --- On Tue, 12/9/08, mrs.fabulous <mrs.fabulous wrote: White sugar uses animal products? Guest guest
Does the bone char change the taste of the sugar or does it strickly make it look white? >
Guest guest
I don't think any of the bone char gets into the sugar, although I suppose it is possible, so the bone char does not change the taste in and of itself, but the process of refining the sugar, decolorizing it, etc... does change the taste and takes away many vitamins and minerals, making it basically empty or naked calories... try some raw sugar or turbinado about 25% of the sugar in the USA is processed in this way, and nearly all of refineries burn the cane fields in the harvesting process, affecting other plant and animal life drastically, those are my personal reasons for not using it --- On Tue, 12/9/08, peelerk <peelerk wrote: Does the bone char change the taste of the sugar or does it strickly make it look white? >
