I really don't " do " Christmas (my mother is not happy about that) but used

to have a sugar cookie recipe that was made with powdered sugar.

Unfortunately I lost it. Really miss those cookies.

We like to make gingerbread houses, using a small milk carton. We cover them

with white cake frosting and stick on graham crackers to form the walls and roof

of the house. Then docorate this, using frosting as glue to attach pretzels,

mini MM candies, shaved almonds or shredded wheat mini biscuts for the roof,

also seperated different colored licorice ropes that you seperate into strings

and cut for windows, and other candies and food items to decorate as your

imagination inspires you. Set on paper or styrofoam plates that you cover with

shredded coconut for show. Or you could make these Gingerbread House Cookies.

They sure look great.

http://www.bhg.com/recipe/cookies/gingerbread-house-cookie/

There are many You Tube videos that you can watch for step by step

demonstrations on making Gingerbread Houses, using dough and cookie cutters to

make the walls, roof, trees, etc. Here is one.

http://www.expertvillage.com/video-series/3766_gingerbread-house.htm What did

we do before You Tube?

We've made those cookie cutter ornaments from applesauce and cinnamon, These

sure smell good. Use a straw to make a hole for tying a ribbon in to hang it

with. http://www.handmadecountry.com/ezine/cinnamon.html These turn out

pretty and make nice gifts and look great on the tree.

http://www.grouprecipes.com/79955/cinnamon-ornaments.html

Another favorite is the whole cloves that you push into a navel orange,

completely covering it. Tye a ribbon arount the orange and hang it over a

doorway or set on a pretty christmas saucer to the scent of the orange and

cloves can scent your room. Wear some gloves or thimble when pressing in the

cloves.

We love to take a day and bake different Christmas cookies, candies and

sweetbread/muffins to give away to my husbands co-workers in his department.

Those guys love it and their wives usually send similar things to share too.

Merry Christmas,

Judy

My sugar cookies! I do stars and Christmas trees, and this year I'll do the

red and white stocking if I can find the cutter. Oh -- and I found a little

cardinal cookie cutter, he'll be fun to decorate! These are nice, soft sugar

cookies that are relatively easy to roll out, especially if you roll them

out between two sheets of waxed paper. For the frosting, the butter adds

flavor and the margarine ensures that the frosting doesn't " melt " at room

temperature. My favorite thing about the frosting is the almond extract --

yum!

No-Chill Sugar Cookies

1 c powdered sugar

1 stick margarine

1 stick butter

1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

pinch salt

1 egg

1 1/4 tsp baking powder

3 c flour

Cream margarine, butter, and sugar. Add egg, salt, vanilla. Add flour a

little at a time, beating with electric mixer. No need to chill - roll and

cut. 350F 10-15 min.

Buttercream Frosting

1 stick butter

1 stick margarine

1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

1 1/2 tsp almond extract

3-4 c powdered sugar

2-3 tbsp milk or heavy whipping cream

Cream butter, margarine, extracts, and 2 c powdered sugar. Add milk or

whipping cream and sugar to desired consistency.

I found it in a gifty antique shop (but not an antique) in Littleton,

Colorado when I went to see my sister for Thanksgiving. I'm sure you can

find them online somewhere, though. :) I'm a bird lover, and cardinals are

my Christmas birds to be on everything! :) I have the Pfaltzgraff

Winterberry dishes, and the cardinal pie bird from that collection got me

started. I like pie birds, too, but only have a couple. They have to be

double-sided taped down on top of my microwave so the cats don't knock them

off and break them! I actually end up feeding lots of cardinals in the

winter -- I have a tiny patio, and two years ago, I had 3 pairs of cardinals

eating at the same time! Of course, I get tons of mourning doves, black-eyed

junkos, chickadees, and sparrows, too! :)

Over the past few years pre-Christmas baking w/ my sister has become

my favorite part of the season. We pick 2 or 3 recipes and spend all

day baking and listening to carols & other fun music. When my oldest

nephew was little we'd always do sugar cookies so he could decorate

them. This year he won't be with us in time to bake and my younger

nephew is too little yet so we are doing something with cranberries

and I'm advocating for Granny Mae's Orange-Nut refrigerator cookies

which are SO yummy (did them last year on my own).

Also I always bake a bunch of kringle for my grandparents and others.

Does anyone have a good recipe for ornaments? Edible or non? I bet

my little nephew would like making those...

Peace,

Diane

My husband has a recipe for some date cherry cookies that his late mother

used to make. I'm going to surprise him with some in his stocking this

year. I always make a Mississipii Mud Cake. My family would probably

revolt if I didn't make it. This will be my first meatless Christmas. My

husband bought a rib roast......this is going to be tough!!!!!
