I have never used one but coworkers have brought them to work and made bread for

us. Looked very easy and the bread tasted good.

Audrey had a good idea, try a mix from the market, you might have a faulty

machine.

Ive been interested in a bread machine. So how does it work, you throw all

the stuff in and it needs it and everything? Does it bake it too?

I love the smell of homemade bread baking too, Audrey. I use my bread

machine. It sure takes all the time and energy out of making homemade bread

doesn't it.

I've tried both of these and while I like both better than any store-bought

bread, I prefer the 100% Whole Wheat mix. I make the dough in my bread

machine and then bake in the oven. It makes my home smell wonderful, too!

They even have a gluten-free mix and a low-carb, here are the rest of their

mixes: http://www.bobsredmill.com/search.php?mode=search

It has a removable pan that has a little paddle in it that turns to mix and

knead the dough for you. They have different settings (mine has 8 different

ones) for white bread, wheat bread, breads with fruits & nuts, etc. Also one

for dough, which kneads your dough and gets it ready to bake but does not

bake it -- the other settings will bake the bread, too.

I don't bake in mine for a couple of reasons -- one is that the pan is kind

of square, so you don't end up with a pretty, loaf-shaped loaf if you bake

in the machine. The dough cycle takes 1 1/2 hours, so when it's done, I just

take the dough out and put it into my own loaf pan to bake. The other reason

is that the darn loaf pan is non-stick and I prefer not to bake in

non-stick, because I know that we end up eating a lot of Teflon (that can't

be good) and because if it gets heated to a certain high temperature, it

release fumes that can kill my parrots (birds have much more sensitive

respiratory systems than we do).

Hope this helps! I love my bread machine -- I've only successfully used

mixes in it, though. The one time I tried a recipe, I made a big mess. :(

I used to have a bread machine, but the kind I had put a big hole down the

center of my bread. I just bake it by hand. I have a Bosch mixer and I love

it. I don't bake as much as I did before, but I love to make cinnamon rolls

on the weekends.

Yeah, mine does that too. That's why I bake it in the oven! :)

Thanks so much!! I understand why you wouldn't want to bake in it. I guess

that will be something else on my wish list. Wonder where I can find a

cheapy one. Hmmm. Think Ill peruse ebay tonight. J

I don't know where you live, but where I live (Maryland), I see literally

TONS of them in the thrift stores. Honestly, I usually see at least 3 per

store per visit.

I don't know what your thrift stores are like, but I would check there

first. They are usually really, really cheap at thrift stores, too. I've

seen them for around $5-25. You can always find the manual online if you

find a used one that doesn't have it. At least that way you haven't invested

a lot if you find you don't like it. If I knew where mine was, I would give

it to you. I haven't used it in 10 years, but it is essentially brand new

because I used it maybe 3 times.

Also, check out this web site: www.thefreshloaf.com. I love it! They have

all kinds of recipes for breads by hand, by machine, whatever. I will tell

you to think about baking by hand. It can be time consuming, but I am

telling you it is addictive. Another site that is good, and has good recipes

for beginners is this one:

http://www.redstaryeast.com/lessons/domestic_baking_lessons/ My daughter and

I made the pizza dough (that was my first time ever). It is really good.

Plus it was quick and easy.

As you can tell, I am a bread fanatic. I also used to grind my own wheat,

but due to my asthma had to stop. But nothing beats freshly ground flour.

When I make pancakes with it, the batter literally has hundreds of

bubbles--it looks like it's alive, which can be weird at first, but on the

other hand it's really cool.
