Nut Butters (funny you should mention it!)

Funny you should mention it about " nut butters " ...

Just yesterday I ran across a small bag of something...I think they call

it " pepitas " .

It's a toasted (salted, oil added) seed that I think comes from a pumpkin or

something

of that plant family.  They are tasty, but this bag was opened (zip sealed at

the top)

and had been in my CAR since who-knows-when!  I brought it into the house and

wondered

what I might do with the seeds...

I thought of this little coffee grinder I had that I only use to grind up

herbs or bread

crumbs or nuts or things like that.  I thought... " Hmmmm...would these 'pepita'

seeds

be good made into some kind of spread??? "

I put the seeds in the small grinder, let 'er rip and --voila!--after

2 batches, I had a small

amount of very finely ground, soft (almost fluffy) meal from the seeds.  I added

just a little

E.V.O.O. (ex-virgin olive oil) to the meal and stirred it into a smooth paste,

put it in a small

jar, then sampled just a little bit on a cracker.  I sprinkled a tiny bit of

medium-hot ground

New Mexican " chile " pepper on the spread and--it was GOOD!

Now that I've tried this, I think I might do it again with other seeds or

nuts.  I'd like to

try a small batch of cashew spread or maybe sunflower seeds.  I was at first a

little afraid

of messing up the coffee mill, but it turned out just fine.  Good idea!

See!  " Brilliant minds " seem to think alike!  LOL!

Tickled pink and enjoying the posts here!

So easy to make your own nut butters. I make only enough for one or two

sandwiches in my electric coffee grinder. Takes just a few seconds and

is so much cheaper than buying the pre-made. Use any nuts or a

combination of your favorites. I sometimes use sunflower seeds and

pumpking seeds. Add your favorite spices/herbs,sea salt, a little olive

oil / honey or agave nectar.
