Hello,

I don't know what the 3 stands for (but would like to). However, I do have

something I would like to share regarding tomatoes. I only know this for a fact

regarding Ontario (Canada) produced tomatos, peppers, and cucumbers. The ones

grown in a greenhouse are almost always pesticide free (a friend's family runs a

series of greenhouses). They will use pesticides on occasion but this is

extremely rare (so they can't be certified organic). As I understand it, it is

due to the controlled environment of the greenhouse.

Anyway, you still can't get greenhouse tomatos all year in Ontario due to the

cold weather (too costly to heat the greenhouses). It might be worth looking

into in other regions of North America to see if the same holds true.

I, personally, avoid as much imported food as possible (for food that we grow in

Ontario...I still buy oranges, bananas, etc). So, for me, it is nice to eat a

" local " tomato in November.

For what it's worth.

My sister works at a store, I will have to ask her if she knows. My thought is

maybe it means they were grown in Mexico. I noticed that all of the tomatoes

available at our store were grown there. I reluctantly purchsed some for a

party...We have about 12 tomato plants planted outside, can't wait for them to

produce!

I found a listing of Produce Look Up Numbers here

http://www.plucodes.com/

I read an article that said that 9 before those numbers meant that the item was

organic, but if an 8 prefaced the number that the item was GMO... they didn't

say what that meant. But kept saying if prefaced by 9 you are fine, but if by 8

don't put it on  your plate.

Having said all that, several of the numbers in the normal 4 digit codes start

with a 3. I don't know if that helps, but that's what I came up with. Perhaps,

next time you see it you could jot down everything on the label to do a better

search.
