Chickens normally eat slugs, snails, bugs, tomato horn works, etc. However,

they also eat grain, I believe so even whole wheat bread crumbs would probably

work until you could get them some real food from the feed store. Shame on

him--these are babies.

When I used to raise tomatoes when I lived in Sacramento, I used to pick off the

horn worms every night after work and take them to my neighbors chickens long

before I was a vegetarian.

so my friend has two 7 week old chicks, and they ran out of food for them and

can't go to work until tomorrow. I just noticed and told him they had to give

the chicks something because they are obviously hungry. Do any of you know what

kind of (vegetarian) food around the house 7 week old chicks can eat?

Fine whole wheat crumbs will work and tell your friend to go 2 days without food

and see how it feels.

First off, are the chicks on the ground 'cause if they are they might not

actually need food. Chickens are very adept at finding their own food. It's

just when they are held in captivity they need to be fed. Chickens will eat

anything - no joke, they will eat anything! Even themselves. My chickens

don't particularly like bananas though and will eat those last, but they

will kill mice, or a weaker chicken and eat that if pressed to do so (not

that my chickens have ever been pressed to kill anything but it's in their

nature to do so). That said, I would give 7 week old chicks some veggie

scraps cut into small pieces, shredded carrot, bread, cheerios or corn

flakes, an apple core, leftover noodles pepper guts (seeds and stuff),

refried beans - pretty much anything. But because these guys are still

little they won't be able to rip a bagel apart or anything like that so make

sure you chop it up for them, just like you would a toddler. And they really

like grass too, so you could always pick a handful on your way and slip it

to them on the sly.

Thanks everyone for the information!

For now these chicks are in a box inside the house. They let them out every once

in a while though; this will change once they get a coop.

I'll let my friend know. I don't know how someone can be so irresponsible to

run out of food for their animals - I would feel heartbroken if my cat ever went

hungry.

Thanks again!

I run out of food all the time...but I don't worry about it 'cause bagged

food isn't their primary source - scraps are - I've always got this

conundrum with my food scraps...compost or chickens? Alas it always seems

the compost suffers a little, but then again, I do compost the chicken

litter, so I guess I compost the scraps second hand.
