Guest guest
I had an expensive one from France and gave it to a Freecycler, was given one as a give and again gave it to another Freecycler. I can't be bothered with them. I know some people love them. To me they are a waste of space and time. I have looked a dozens online and so far I like the OXO pump action one. I used to have an old Tupperware one that I had to crank and crank to work. I have been buying more fresh lettuce than the bag lettuce and thought a salad spinner would keep it fresher longer. Karo
Guest guest
i've always felt the same way--for the space they take up, you could have a really nice and useful new pot! but when i was younger, i had a roommate who never travelled without one (well, almost) -- http://wheatlessandmeatless.blogspot.com/ WHEATLESS AND MEATLESS Fine Flavors From The Gluten-Free Vegetarian
Guest guest
Karo, is this the one you mean, http://tinyurl.com/lzo2mt ? If so, I have that one and love it! We also have a Zyliss [sp.?] spinner, and it's fine, but I like the OXO one much better because it makes it very easy to give things a quick spin while continuing to do other things in the kitchen. It's also wonderfully unwobbly, and it seals tightly enough to store washed greens in the fridge. Hope this helps! Peace, Mo Karen wrote: > Does anyone use a salad spinner, if so which one? Guest guest
Thanks Maureen, I think I will get an OXO spinner after all. Anything that helps me eat more salads. I also love the idea of making a blended salad in my new old vitamix. Green food is so much fun to play with. Karo ---- Maureen 5/29/2009 6:14:51 AM Re: Salad Spinner? Guest guest
What is the purpose of a salad spinner? To keep stuff fresh or to toss salads? Or both? On a similar note, I have a rubbermaid-type container for single-serving salads to take to work. It has a compartment for dressing that keeps it away from the salad until you turn a little dial and open it up -- then you shake up your container and your dressing is all over it! Pretty neat, but it's a real pain if I don't get it closed completely and it leaks. I got it at Linens 'n Things. Audrey S.
Guest guest
I have the exact same one shown in the link. We use it just about every day and as far as salad spinners go, it is the best i have had. We grow all our salads and all other greens, so I do a lot of washing straight from the garden. We eat a lot of salads too. I find it useful to wash all greens, not just salad greens. If you will be cooking them, then you do not need to spin the greens as dry, but I find it useful to wash them, and as Mo said, to store in the fridge when you collected too much lettuces or kale. Guest guest
besides providing a container to wash, the main purpose is to spin or centrifuge the water out of the greens leaves, so they are dry, and you can put the dressing on the salad without it turning into a soggy mess. When you spin for a while, the water collects on the outer bowl and you can dump it out. The way to do it without a spinner is to try to dry the lettuce leaves by spinning them in a towel, this has made some interesting messes in the kitchen for me..... , Audrey Snyder <AudeeBird wrote: > > What is the purpose of a salad spinner? Guest guest
I too have the full-sized OXO (large) salad spinner from Amazon.com. It works really well to help DRY fresh cut greens, kale-mustard-spinach from the yard. Normally I use a bucket or large stockpot to collect (fill with) greens and then use another filled with water to wash them in handfuls either in the kitchen or in the yard. The spinner then comes into its own to quickly dry the greens so they can immediately be used or stored away in the fridge, usually in one or two large tupperware containers. My only complaint is that the push down drive mechanism takes up 2 or 3 cups worth of space inside the spinner -- really I guess I need an even larger one -- 'cause it takes me two or three batches spinned to get all my greens washed. But it works well and is well made and should last a long time. Yes, it takes up the space of a pot in the kitchen but it's light enough to put anywhere and no pot will do what it does.
