Guest guest
I love lentil sprouts and was making 2-3 batches, overlapping, a week. Then I read that only sprouts sold specifically for sprouting should be sprouted as others may be sprayed with something to inhibit sprouting and may not be processed right to be eaten raw. Has anyone else heard this? Do all of you use just grocery store lentils or special ones? Michelle
Guest guest
Yes - ONLY organic sprout seeds grown for that purpose should be used. While many seeds from a nursery or grocer may actually sprout, ALL seeds carry a risk of bacterial contamination (most commonly salmonella). This is why it's important to get your seed from an established, reputable organic Seed Supplier. Back in the 90's there were several Salmonella outbreaks linked to sprouts (I believe these were all commercially grown sprouts, not sprouted at home). Since then, great care has been taken by Sprout Seed Suppliers to insure their seeds are unconaminated. handypantry.com and sproutpeople.com are excellent sources for a wide variety of seeds. I grow a couple of batches a week, mostly broccoli sprouts, in a half gallon mason jar in my kitchen cabinet. Hope this helps, Tony
