I have found that growing green when ripe type tomatoes (for example Aunt Rudy's

German green or Cherokee green) will confuse both the 6 legged and 4 legged

tomato thieves (hey, maybe even the 2 legged but fortunately I don't have

those...). My 4 dogs are among the second group and I have caught them in the

act of stealing tomatoes many times. They do not steal the green ones though,

even when ripe.

My neighborhood has gobs and gobs of squirrels and they just love all

my fruits and vegetables. They pick the hard green tomatoes, take

one bite and throw the rest down..... they even completely stripped

my pecan tree of GREEN pecans.....

Hi Rosa,

My biggest tomato thieves have two legs, usually in the mid summer I get loud

mockingbirds and bluejays that put their beaks into the top-most ripe red

tomatoes; even when there is water for them in the yard. But I've also seen them

take great pains to find and pull off tomato-hornworms that it may take me many

minutes of hard looking to find.
