Guest guest
I'm coming to this late, but the best slug killer I've ever found is a dilute ammonia water spray. My fil's house was on the national Hosta tour one year and we had to minimize the slug damage. Every morning when the slugs were still out I'd go out and mist the gardens. He had so many slugs I was worried about the amount of ammonia I was putting down but there didn't seem to be any detrimental effect. Amy **************Great Deals on Dell Laptops. Starting at $499. Guest guest
Slugs are bad here in dark, moist places. My FIL's garden is in a wooded area, he gets them so bad. Doug tells me about the banana slugs he used to see in the Pacific Northwest. Ours are much smaller, thankfully! Earwigs are icky!! I got bit by one once the first night we lived in our house. The house had been empty a few months, it was hot, and one fell off the ceiling, landed on my hip and CHOMP! I hate them. I mostly see them in damp areas too, like the sink and I just try to wash them down. I figure if they crawl back out after I leave the room they'd better hustle up and get gone before I come back! My kids get freaked out by the fairly large centipedes we sometimes get in our basement.amy In a message dated 2/6/2009 7:51:00 A.M. Guest guest
Thanks for all the suggestions. Believe me, I've tried them all: sharp gravel, egg shells, copper rings, diatomaceous earth, copper mesh, beer traps, ashes... The reality of slugs is that they travel on a trail of slime that coats sharp edges and they glide over them. I've watched them do it. But I appreciate everyone's concern for my garden. : - ) ~ irene

Guest guest
I am quite sure no one wants to hear this but my slug problem has disappeared now that I have 6 chickens.....it's a trade off of issues it's a matter of what issue you want to deal with..( no rosters) and a bonus are the eggs..if you eat them..they don't just eat slugs so a lot of pests are gone.... Guest guest
I've never been tremendously overrun with slugs, but I've also always had chickens and geese and they do take care of a multitude of pests. (Now if I could just convince the shrews that my living room is not the place for them I'll be all set). I have to say though there's nothing worse than stepping on a slug barefoot! The goo doesn't wipe off like poop or mud, it doesn't even come off in just plain water - you have to use soap, and I generally don't keep that outside. Yuck! Donna, slugs like damp - LA doesn't strike me as damp - that's probably why you don't have a problem with slugs. Earwigs - http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/2000/2068.html - There a whole different thing, but essential for breaking things down. Where I live, we have too many trees, and because we have too many trees we have too many stumps and logs and branches and stuff littering the ground. Earwigs take care of that. I leave earwigs alone, or move them to a mushy log where they'll be happy to live out the rest of their days. Tameson - <thelilacflower > Now are these a problem in other states? I'm in L.A.
