Guest guest
I didn't know pears or apricots could be fresh when I was a kid. We ONLY had the mushy canned fruit, soaked in sugary syrup. (Don't even mention canned " fruit cocktail " !) After getting out on my own, I ventured to try FRESH pears, then, much later, fresh apricots--OH MY!!!! THOSE are so, SOO good, especially the apricots! I got some last week from our Farmers' Market--only to learn from the vendor that " These are almost the last ones of this season! " They don't last long (at least, the locally-grown ones), and they are usually expensive if not locally grown, but I just LOVE them so much! Before I learned to eat canned ( " store-bought " ) pears and peaches, I remember in my EARLY childhood, that we got home-canned fruit from my grandparents: APPLES (in a sugared liquid)--which were really soggy and bland, but it was all we knew and only ate them in the winter-time, usually with cinnamon on the halved, peeled " canned " apples. My Grandmother and my mom also home-canned some peaches, sour cherries (only for pies!) and occasionally some pears. Not the most tasty, I think now, but I guess my mom pased it on to us, as she grew up with all that home-canning of fruit and vegetables every summer. I like canned pineapple (though NOW I know FRESH is better-tasting!)--and I like to mix a can of pineapple (in juice ONLY) tid-bits and a can of mandarin oranges...maybe with a few slices of banana added, or not, depending on what else I have--to make a quick " fruit cup " to go with a meal. This " canned stuff " has been a very interesting thread here! Good wishes for your week! --Laura B., in Illinois I love canned apricots and mandarin oranges, too. Had too much of peaches and pears growing up.
