slugs

Believe me, I have tried beer and every other remedy ever suggested,

short of sitting up nights with a shotgun! Beer traps will capture

not only slugs but beneficial creatures, and the slug and snail-

specific baits (non-injurious to other life forms) sorta work.

I've settled for trapping them under boards (they eat my garden by

night, creep under boards to hide at sunrise, like vampires),

scooping them and giving them to the hens. Not a perfect solution, I

know...

I'm coming to this late, but the best slug killer I've ever found is a

dilute ammonia water spray. My fil's house was on the national Hosta tour one

year

and we had to minimize the slug damage. Every morning when the slugs were

still out I'd go out and mist the gardens. He had so many slugs I was worried

about the amount of ammonia I was putting down but there didn't seem to be any

detrimental effect. Amy

Slugs are bad here in dark, moist places. My FIL's garden is in a wooded

area, he gets them so bad. Doug tells me about the banana slugs he used to see

in the Pacific Northwest. Ours are much smaller, thankfully!

Earwigs are icky!! I got bit by one once the first night we lived in our

house. The house had been empty a few months, it was hot, and one fell off the

ceiling, landed on my hip and CHOMP! I hate them. I mostly see them in damp

areas too, like the sink and I just try to wash them down. I figure if they

crawl back out after I leave the room they'd better hustle up and get gone

before I come back!

My kids get freaked out by the fairly large centipedes we sometimes get in

our basement.amy

Okay, its been a couple of days since reading emails so Im behind, but I feel

the need to add my 2 cents worth on this one, heh.  When my little brother was

around 2 he LOVED to work in the garden with my mother.  Of course his idea of

working in the garden was wearing ONLY a diaper (which I still have pics of!)

and getting as muddy and dirty as possible.  So one day he picked up a slug and

carried it around nearly the whole day as if it were a new pet.  Of course my

mother kept attempting to either 1) stay away from him 2) get the slug away from

him.......and not suceeding in either.  Later that day Justin comes to my mom

saying he wants to make the slug naked.......this means taking off its outer

skin........he somehow figured out how to do that, poor slug did NOT survive my

brother that day.

I have wondered about ways that So. Cal. and Florida are similar and different.

Bugs must be a huge difference. Donna, do you have lizards or ants? I used to

think it weird how my Ohio cousins would LOVE catching lizards and try to keep

them as pets.

don't keep that outside. Yuck!

Donna, slugs like damp - LA doesn't strike me as damp - that's probably why

you don't have a problem with slugs.

Earwigs - http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/2000/2068.html - There a whole

different thing, but essential for breaking things down. Where I live, we

have too many trees, and because we have too many trees we have too many

stumps and logs and branches and stuff littering the ground. Earwigs take

care of that. I leave earwigs alone, or move them to a mushy log where

they'll be happy to live out the rest of their days.
