Guest guest
I've only been on the site a few days and I am learning so much. I LOVE this site! I visited the recipe section and am so excited about all the " goodies " that are there. However...every day you guys share a wealth of recipes. Thank you! I hope to share some with you down the road. My hubby and I are pretty new vegans...we jumped in on March 1, so I've been pretty much following other's recipes (and most of those copyrighted ones) up 'til now...except for soups where it's often a little of this and a little of that. But when I DO make something original or considerably altered and it's a winner of a recipe, I'll post it. LOL! Our daughter got me a soy yogurt maker for my birthday a week ago and I didn't think I'd have such a time locating plain nonfat soy yogurt for the starter, but wow, I'm coming up empty after looking in lots of grocery stores. Called several health food stores and they don't have it either. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? I haven't looked online yet...perhaps that's my next move. Guest guest
Hello, If you can't find soy yogurt in any of your local stores, there is or was dried vegan yogurt starter available through links on Bryanna Clark Grogan's veggie yogurt making pages; they're worth a read even if you don't find the starter. I myself most often use a fil mjolk starter (ongoing room-temp yogurt culture) that I bought on the Fermented Treasures website, and it works well with all the bean milks I've tried and I grow it exclusively on veggie milks with no problems. Also the Lifeway company makes a live culture soy " kefir " drink that tastes very good in soymilk and I've used it repeatedly to make several batches of good veggie yogurt. You just stir it in like you would the yogurt. They have a store-finder on their website for you. Guest guest
Thank you so much! I'll check out the sites you mention and am sure to come up with a starter product. I like your choice of an " ongoing room-temp yogurt culture " so I'll look at that one first. Our area grocery stores have soy yogurt, though pricey, but only with fruit. No plain nonfat. In my former, pre-vegan life, nonfat plain yogurt was always a staple in our refrig. Just do not want to do without yogurt without first exploring every option! Thanks again. I've been following your discussion about making one's own soy milk. Just may start that too...sounds like you have some experience with making it if I run into any snafus! Have you or anyone else had success in making any nonfat (or very low fat) SOY ice creams? We've discovered the SO Delicious brand in the stores and know it can be done! Seems like it would certainly be cheaper to make it...and although I'd have to have my husband locate it in the garage attic, we already have an electric ice cream maker.
