Guest guest
This is great news. I have seen this so many times. If you tell them in advance it's veg meat they precondition themselves into disliking it. Make a nice tasty dish and they love it. I never sneak ingredients and pretend they are the real thing but if I make a dish and someone tries it they will eat first and then say, this was meat right? They are always shocked how terrific everything tastes. LOL Donna Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry " andefrayser " <andefrayser Tue, 21 Jul 2009 16:04:46 My surprise dinner guest! I just wanted to share this experience since I have been seeing so many who have family members that are less than supportive of their veggie life style. My oldest brother came past yesterday so that my husband could help him with a project. He lives 2 hours away and out of habit I invited him to dine with the family. (I fully expected to hear the same- no way, I am a man I need meat- yadda, yadda, yadda...) To my surprise he said yes! He asked what was for dinner and I told him " asparagus, cranberry pecan salad, succotash, sausage and peppers and fresh pineapple " . He says " sausage huh? Finally gave up that vegetarian madness, well yes I would love to dine with you. " He hung up before I could tell him that it was a veggie sausage. Well, they ran late so I fed the kids and made my brother and husband their plates and put them up until they got home. (My brother is an executive chef and has owned several successful restaurants before retiring) Well he sits down and starts to eat. He gets to the sausage and says- " what type of sausage is this? Is it turkey? " I said " no it's a veggie brat, that I seasoned and grilled " . He stopped, looked at me, and said " Well Hel* this is good give me another one! " He later told my husband he understood why he gave up meat, my brother has chronic stomach problems and is usually in great pain after a large meal, he said that for the first time- he was full but not in pain. He asked for some recipes that he might give this vegetarian thing a try. I told him to join the group- so if you are out the P- welcome! Guest guest
My surprise dinner guest! Ande, If you don't mind my asking, what kind or brand of " veggie brat " did you serve the evening your brother joined you-all for dinner? I am happy to hear he liked it and that he didn't have stomach problems following the meal. I sympathize with him on that count--happened to me that way, too. When I ate the non-meat food (I think it was one of the Boca Italian sausages, which, sadly, are not available anymore)--and didn't have so much heartburn and that " stuffed " feeling after--that convinced me, too! My DH is like your brother--he eats first, asks later. I think he usually suspects, anyway, but if he asked first, he'd miss out on the good food. It tickles me when DH eats a big serving of something and then goes for seconds, even saying as he does so, " I know this is that fake meat stuff, but it's kinda good! " Sometimes he comes out and asks me point blank, " Is this Quorn? Is this Boca? " I tell him what it is and am still amazed he takes it pretty well. Your brother just might make the jump to " light speed " someday himself. Finding out how good the food is and how well it makes him feel seems to be a huge incentive to him. Good wishes and blessings! --Laura B., in Illinois
Guest guest
That's a great story! At my former job, I had a co-worker who used to just tease me about being vegetarian. 'I like meat, blah, blah, blah'. So, one day she saw me eating a Morningstar Farms chicken patty and she asked for a piece. After she tried it, she goes, 'This is chicken!' The next week we decided to have lunch together. She wanted to make chicken parmigiana with my chik patties. It was really good. My father is the notorious vegetarian hater in my family. No one else in the family but him will make a comment when I cook. My daughter is teetering on the decision to become a veg. She loves animals, but she also likes to eat them, so there's her dilemma. She also calls my food 'fake food', but will eat it. Ugh.
Guest guest
I forgot to add that I had stomach problems like your brother. Whenever I ate meat, I would double up in pain like someone punched me. After I had my daughter, I had to have my gall bladder removed, and then I really couldn't eat it. That's been almost 18 years and I haven't looked back. On Sun, Jul 26, 2009 at 9:07 AM, Elaine Pollard <elainepollardwrote: > That's a great story! Guest guest
It was the Yves Veggie Brat or either the Zesty Italian Veggie Brat by Yves--- When I went to the store to purchase another pack they were out of the zesty ones so I purchased plain and seasoned it. I think they may have gotten the seasoned plain ones.
