Guest guest
This is great on a plain chocolate cake. Mom's Cooked Icing 3/4 stick oleo 3-4 tbsp flour 3/4 c. milk 3/4 c. sugar 1 tsp vanilla dash salt Melt oleo in saucepan and add flour - stir quickly. Pour in milk and heat to boil, stirring - add sugar and vanilla. Stir well to dissolve sugar. Take off heat when thickened, add salt, and spread on warm cake. Audrey S. Guest guest
I think, but don't qoute me that Oleo is butter. I vaguely recall hearing about it as a kid, but it's been many, many years now lol. If it's not, you could probably substitue butter for it or something like that such as margarine. Dennis

Guest guest
Oleo is margarine. Back in war time (WWII) oleo was white into which an orange packet was mixed to give it the yellow coloring. It was very unappetizing to see before it was mixed. Guest guest
Ew! I did not know that little bit of info, Diana! Interesting. I just know " oleo " is what my 88-year-old grandma has always called it. (Her recipes!) Audrey S. On Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 11:23 PM, diana scott <dianascot_33wrote: > > > Oleo is margarine. Guest guest
yep, that is all my dad calls it. Actually it is short for the word " oleomargarine' which means the same as margarine. ;O) Chanda thelilacflower wrote: > > > Just an old word for margarine. Guest guest
The color packet was there because the dairy farmers had gotten all up in arms about fake butter so the margarine producers were not allowed to put the color in. People had to do it themselves. Oleo looked like lard before mixing the color in. That's what my G'pa says. Peace, Diane , diana scott <dianascot_33 wrote: > > Oleo is margarine.
