Guest guest
I am fairly new vegetarian, just a litle over a year. When I get a chance I like to go the my local farmers market to try different things. I continually encounter individuals who dont what type of fruit or veggie they are selling, or just dont want to answer questions about it such as taste etc. Has anyone else encountered this? Guest guest
I can usually pick them out...the kids/teenagers, the grandmotherly types, occasionally a man. Perhaps it's where I live, that they kind of fess up to their ignorance instead of answering the question saying something to the effect of " ooh, sorry I don't know, I didn't grow this I am filling in for the farmer who's doing such and such today " . I've never met an actual farmer that wasn't able to answer those kinds of questions. I have to say, where I live the towns are pretty small and the farmer's markets tend to overlap each other, so If a farmer wants to make the most of farmers markets one needs to be at all of them at the same time, so especially on Thursdays and Saturdays one can expect to encounter subs. Also, the primary reason I don't sell at my town's market is because they have a mandatory attendance rule, since I drive a school bus I can't be there for the first hour of the first and last several Fridays, and I am unable to procure a reliable sub, so until my husband's schedule changes or my daughter (12) get her license, I haven't upped my production enough to sell at market. Guest guest
I've had the opposite experience. Pretty much everyone I buy from at the farmers market loves to talk about what they're growing and how they're growing it. I like to get there early in the morning, when the market first opens, since I tend to wake up early anyway and I don't like crowds. Could the time maybe be the difference? I've started asking more questions in the last 4-5 years, but the loving to talk about their produce thing has been true in different places that I've lived. Sorry you're having trouble. That would really frustrate me! Peace, Mo novemeberbabyboy1 wrote: > I am fairly new vegetarian, just a litle over a year. Guest guest
Some of those folks who sell stuff at farmer's markets buy it at discount grocery stores and resell it as their own stuff. My daughter used to work at one of those stores and could go down the line of sellers at the farmer's market and go, " He bought from us, he bought from us, she bought from us... " It was a real eye-opener. Look for the trucks who have " <someone's> FARM " painted on the side and you'll probably have the real local farmer.
