Guest guest
Oh I so hate that! That is one of my pet peeves. I make my kids taste something before they can say they don't like it. As a military brat we lived off base in Europe most of my childhood and if I wasn't open to trying new foods I would have starved to death. In fact it was Italy where I first had blood oranges, those are to die for, but so many of my friends won't even taste them because of the name. The open air markets where you could buy everything from fresh produce to tennis shoes were amazing. (Also even at an early age I became a gelato and coffee snob! lol) I also had my first fried squash blossom there and those are tasty! England is where I first had beans on toast, a very homey comfort food in England and I enjoy it now from time to time. I love the barley water concentrates they have (I can find them in Publix now!!whoohoo!!), Turkish delight, and they are famous for their tea for a reason! (I LOVE cucumber sandwiches and cress ones too!) I have to admit I developed a love for chips with malt vinegar also if it was imprinted with news type so much the better lol (I guess that doesn't age me to badly right?). Man just thinking about it is making my mouth water! Germany I loved the hard rolls, mom said she used to use those to comfort me when I was teething. (I was born there.) They have a carrot salad type of thing made with celery root that is made with vinegar that I adore. I crave that bad boy at times!! lol Even here in the states though there is sooo much to value from our " melting pot " of goodies. We have refried beans and tortillas, fried okra, okra and tomatoes, dandelion greens, poke salad, collards (I use vegetable stock instead of chicken to make mine and I like it even better, no meat added to mine either.), corn bread, tempura, apple pie, perogies, matzo's, stir fries! I love all sorts of food and a good curry makes my day! I even recently bought a new cookbook Native American Foods. No it's not a vegetarian cookbook, but it does have some awesome recipes for what is native to us. I love the three sisters, corn, beans, and squash! Come to find out I have been eating fry bread all my life, just Gramma called it hoe cake. lol (found out true hoe cake is made with corn meal and is flat, but that's what she called it and it's amazing with a little sorghum!) Sorry for the rant lol. I just can't imagine going through life not tasting it! (food and or otherwise!) ~Tee - Barbara & George Grenier Monday, April 06, 2009 12:12 PM dislikes I know two people in a group who both said they didn't like Indian food and I asked both of them if they had ever tried it and both said no. Guest guest
I've never had Indian food. I think I'd like to try a good restaurant before trying to make my own -- know what it's supposed to taste like! There are lots of Indian restaurants in my city. Guest guest
Hi Tee: Another fellow military brat. We were stationed in England for three years, and that's where I got my love of yogurt. It doesn't taste the same here as it does there. I remember it being very tart. When I make my own, it's close to the taste, but not exactly. Of course there's lemon curd--I can eat jars of that. And I remember how the English drank milk in their tea--long before I heard of people doing it Stateside. I totally agree with you on the food issue. I love trying different types of food. I love going to different ethnic restaurants. A few months ago we went to an Afghan restaurant. It was sooo good. My next try will be Ethiopian. I think of it like an adventure. I will probably never get to go to Ethiopia, Thailand or India, but I can experience a bit of the culture. I hate it when people sneer their nose at a particular food group. It's so rude. As for Indian food, I love it! It's among my favorites (Thai is my favorite). I love the way it smells. I tend to use a lot of Indian spices in my cooking now. My family is from Louisiana, so we're into soul food in a big way. It took A LOT of coaxing, but I finally got my mom to stop cooking collards in fatback or turkey necks. The way we do ours is a teeny bit of olive oil and a bouillon cube or vegetable stock. I'm so happy that we now cook all my soul food favorites without fatback or bacon. You can actually taste the food. On Mon, Apr 6, 2009 at 2:03 PM, Tee <teer2008 wrote: > Oh I so hate that! That is one of my pet peeves. Guest guest
The two restaurants in our city are buffets. Go sample a few things. They usually have signs telling what the food is. The buffets are not too spicy, or at least these aren't. May not be haute cuisine but not very expensive either. Wasn't there a recipe for Tofu Paneer on this list a day or so ago. I know I copied it from somewhere but haven't tried it yet. Barbara At 11:29 AM 4/6/09, you wrote: >I've never had Indian food. Guest guest
I love new foods, old foods, spicy foods (tuned down so my gut doesn't go on strike and my innards don't kink again). The only food I cannot stand in any way, shape or form, is horseradish. Even the smell of it makes me violently ill. Guest guest
Yes! A buffet, that's a great idea! There is a large population of east Indians in my area (there's even a Hindu temple a couple of miles from my home, you wouldn't guess at that in Kansas!) I had more east Indian classmates in my high school graduating class than hispanics or African-Americans (I'm sure that demographic has changed some, I graduated 8 years ago). I'm always seeing ads for Indian restaurants, I'll have to find a friend who likes it and go! Audrey S. Guest guest
I fell in love with yogurt in Italy. We used to take that with fresh season fruits (I remember plums and peaches mostly) on hikes in the Alps. I totally agree with you on the taste though. So much is not the same. Living in small town dixie I haven't had a good gelato in years and years, and I'm sorry while I enjoy the local coffee shops it's just not the same. We got our first publix here just in the past few months. I had to travel into Montgomery for culture and believe me while I love my southern roots dearly Montgomery isn't the place to find culture. With the possible exception of the Shakespeare Theater. ~Tee
Guest guest
Ooh, ooh, ooh, me, Mr. Kotter! Call on me! Vegetable korma, which is a creamy vegetable dish. It's my favorite dish. Also, samosas, which are like turnovers stuffed with potatoes and peas. I also love aloo gobi, which is potatoes and cauliflower, and bengan bartha, an eggplant dish. Also mushroom mattar, which is a creamy mushroom dish. And then there's a creamy spinach dish, quite common in Indian restaurants, but I can't remember what it's called. I think it's sag paneer. And raita, a savory yogurt that I used to cleanse and cool down my palate. I just adore Indian food. Dena - Audrey Snyder Monday, April 06, 2009 11:29 AM Re: dislikes I've never had Indian food. Guest guest
O wow are you in for a treat! My fave is channa masala wich is chickpeas in a spicy red sauce, other faves are saag paneer which is spinach and cubes of very mild cheese (paneer) and any kofta or korma because of the nice butter sauces. I also love raita - a refreshing yogurt based sauce with grated cucumber in it, and achar - pickle, as a condiment. Indian pickle is hot & sour & delicious! Maybe try a buffet place for your first outing so you can try lots of different tastes. Some Indian places offer a thali which is like your own personal buffet all on one tray. Have fun & enjoy whatever you try. I bet if you told the waiter it was your first time, they'd make good suggestions. Peace, Diane , Audrey Snyder <AudeeBird wrote: > > I've never had Indian food.
