This is the perfect recipe for you.  I just made it this weekend and it was so

good.  You can make it as thick you like for over your potato, or add more

broth and call it soup.  It's called Bissara and according to the person who

submitted it, it originated in north Africa.  I didn't have the chile pepper so

I used chili powder instead.  Worked fine.  I also added a little cayenne to

heat it up a bit.  Great on a cold winter day.

2 T olive oil

4 cloves garlic crushed

6 cups water or broth

3 cups dry green split peas

1 dried red chile pepper

2 t paprika

1 t cumin

Salt & pepper to taste

Saute garlic in the olive oil.  Add remaining ingredients, bring to a boil,

reduce heat to low and simmer (uncovered) for about an hour until peas are

tender.  Mash with a wooden spoon until smooth.
