Question about coconut oil

I use it and love it. It gives me energy I've never had. When I was

heavier I could hear my heart pounding on the pillow, not now. After I

lost much weight hair fell out from the top of my head, then it was so

itchy. One time putting coconut oil on it stopped that. Now my hair is

growing back nicely. It also took a mole off. The only other thing that

could be helping my hair grow back is Missing Link omega powder for adults.

My vet recommended it for my cats and they finally started making it for

adults. My holistic vet also recommends coconut oil for the cats!

Question about coconut oil

Does anybody use coconut oil? I've been reading so much conflicting

information about whether or not it contributes to heart disease that

I am thoroughly confused. It's solid at room temperature, which is

supposed to indicate that it's a 'bad' fat, yet it's been consumed by

humans for eons. Anyone got any reliable information about it?

Debra,

Thanks for the links and for sharing your own experience. I'm going

to follow these leads and try to educate myself about coconut oil.

How do you use it? I got some, organic and non-hydrogenated, from a

natural foods store, so I'm open to experimentation.

Thanks again,

I am confused by this myself, since I have found conflicting information.

Humans have also been using lard and butter for ages too so this does not mean

much to me. I do buy it, sometimes I chose the 'lite' version and I love it in

Thai curry dishes. Moderation will do until I convince myself it is a 'good'

fat, like olive oil or many of the nut oils.

Marsha,

Thanks for your information about coconut oil. I had really never

known that it was good for anything other than as a shortening so I'm

currently reading websites and learning a lot of new uses for it. How

do you use it in food?

Many thanks,

Irene, I use coconut oil to sauté. I put the oil in a smoothie once and had

to laugh because took on the coldness and turned hard. A friend of mine

borrowed one of my coconut oil books, called the co. They suggested putting

oil in a smoothie at the very end. I prefer just to take it by the

teaspoonful.

Someone on the coconut forum said anywhere you use fat you can use to

replace with coconut oil. When I make waldorf salad, rather than using all

mayonnaise now I add some coconut milk, blend it together. It makes for a

lighter dressing and the coconut milk is a better fat. I’ve tried many

brands and so far I like Native Forest Classic.

My husband doesn’t care to take coconut oil by the teaspoonful, so I spread

it on toast with almond butter, or spread it on any sandwich bread before

spreading anything else.

I don't eat Coconut Oil I use it as a moisturizer on my skin. Works wonders. Way

too expensive to cook with. I buy organic and keep it in the fridge. Nice and

cool and feels wonderful. It doesn't have to be refrigerated but I like the

texture, coolness and it never gets rancid. I don't find it all that *greasy*

either. I sometimes use it on the ends of my hair when it seems dry. I do eat

organic coconut daily mixed with a few raisins and pecans. It's the first thing

I eat in the morning with my cup of green tea.

I keep a jar of coconut oil both in the kitchen and bathroom. Both are the

organic versions from a health food store.

I use it quite a bit in place of other oils to fry or saute.' The flavor is a

lot cleaner and more aromatic. My husband used it for pizza the other day and I

could really tell the difference. I also use it on toast in place of butter.

I can't recommend it enough as a lotion or face cream, remover of make-up,

massage oil, etc. In the bathroom it really goes a long way and can saves lots

of money as it can replace many higher priced items.

Oh, I also should have added, I used it just the other day as an oil treatment

for my hair before shampooing. It DOES last a very long time when using it for

things such as this and much cheaper and I think much better than conventional

products.

I use it instead of shortening. I also use it in smoothies, and I've even

eaten it on toast. I stir fry with it, too.

I can tell you that I am a chronic overeater. I literally snack all the

time. The first time I tried coconut oil, I ate it for breakfast, and it was

12 before I realized I was hungry. Now, for me that is a long time to go

without eating. I thought it was a fluke the first time, so the next time I

tried it, I got the same results. I used it for a month and lost about 20

lbs. Now, it could be that I was eating a little better, but it really did

cure my cravings.

I have extremely bad eczema on my skin for many years, and after the coconut

oil, it cleared up. My memory improved, and I wasn't tired. I haven't been

eating it lately, and I can feel the sluggishness coming on. When I was on

it, I was more alert. I am definitely going to get back on it.

I use Nutiva. I buy it directly from Amazon for $25 for 59 ounces. It's the

best one I've tried. It's smoother than most, and it's got a pleasant taste.

It tastes good on toast with lemon curd. I know that sounds gross (it did to

me before I tried it), but it is good.

In another , this article was suggested reading. It is about the

research that has been conducted in regards to health, diets, and fats, and it

does explain some of the confusion we all have about which fats are good in

addition to pointing out some of the flaws in the research that has been done in

this area. I don't recall it even mentioning coconut oil, but it was fascinating

reading and really sheds a light on what society believes to be true in regards

to which fats are the good fats. However, though it does help to explain the

confusion, it doesn't offer any answers to the questions or help to sort out the

good fats from the bad fats.
