Capers? It is not quite the same but it is the

common substitute for anchovies.

Anchovy substitutes

Hi all,

I'm mostly a lurker here. And still on the dark side, if you will. Hope this

is a reasonable question for this list?

Last night I made a tofu dish, trying to imitate Thai cooking: stir fried

tofu, onions, chiles (rocotos/manzanos), carrots, celery, broccoli, chopped

pineapple, ginger, garlic, tumeric, some Frank's Louisiana hot sauce for

salt, then some light coconut milk, but it just didn't seem right until I

added an anchovy and then some fish sauce (before and after the coco milk,

actually) I really started out to do a vegetarian dish. I didn't want to use

soy sauce. Is there a good substitute for fish sauce and/or anchovy? I know

I could google it, and probably will, but would like some first hand

suggestions.

Thanks,

Riley

Mashed capers take the place of anchoives.

In the files under the sauce folder there is a vegetarian fish sauce.

Let me know if you need help.

Can't find it. Ah, wait, under:

*Recipes <%2ARecipes/>>

Sauces, Marinades, Gravies, Pesto & Condiments Vegetarian

Fish Sauce. Using seaweed. Very clever people, these vegetarians. ;-)

Thanks,
