RE: Peanut Butter Sandwiches

Mandy,

Welcome to a true American food icon: the Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwich

(a.k.a., the

" PBJ " or " PB & J " )!

Referring to your questions (I'm sure I'll not be the only one to reply!)

1.  Crunchy, smooth peanut butter or doesn't it matter?

--No, I don't think it matters.  I like smooth, but some prefer the

crunchy.  Experiment and see what you prefer!

2.  What flavour jam (jelly) or doesn't it matter?

I have tried numerous flavors of jellies and jams.  My favorites: (black)

raspberry (seedless, if possible) jam, and strawberry jam or preserves, though

not in the same sandwich!  My DH and I like the spreads made of all fruit

without sugars added--they are probably mmore like " jam "   than " jelly " .  (I

think the all-fruit " spreads " are easier to apply to the bread or toasted bread,

too.)

Citrus marmalades are also good with peanut butter--the tart flavors go

nicely with bland, slightly salty peanut butter.  I also tried a goose berry jam

once with peanut butter in a sandwich; that one was most intriguing--very tart

flavor of the jam against the peanut taste--hmmm!  I think I liked it, but not

for very often.  Again, experiment.  In the U.S., the " classic PBJ " flavors are

peanut butter with grape jelly or jam.

3.  What goes on first or does the peanut butter go on 1 slice of bread and

the jam (jelly) on the other?

That would work just fine.  I've been stupid enough to try to spread rather

liquid-y jelly over the top of peanut butter on a piece of warm toast and it

mostly just slides around!  Some people have gone a step further and have mixed

the

jam/jelly  INTO the peanut butter ahead of time to make a uniform spread--you

only have to dress up one of your 2 bread slices that way.

NOW, if you want a VERY interesting sandwich, and one that I think is a

great flavor treat, try your peanut butter with a few slices of sweet or dill

pickles instead of the jelly!  This is my all-time favorite way to eat a peanut

butter sandwich.  It's a surprisingly tasty combination, and every bit as

versatile as the peanut butter and jelly standard!

Good wishes to you!
