Guest guest
I just don't think lima beans have much taste at all. The parrot I had for 10 years LOVED them, though -- I think he mainly liked the texture, because all of my parrots like beans. They don't have much of a sense of taste (except that they like sweet and salty just like us!), but they like interesting textures. The messier you can get with a food, the better they like it. I think that's why sweet potato is so popular with my parrots! Audrey S. Guest guest
Laura, the link to the web site I gave you cannot be used to order them (my mistake), but they should be able to tell you where in your area to get them, or you can give the information to your grocer and ask them to carry them? Guest guest
I've learned to like cooked dried lima beans--the big ones, and the largest, the " butter bean " limas. I think I started liking baby lima beans when I tried the frozen ones, which are fresher-tasting and seem much less mealy. If they are cooked in just a LITTLE bit of water, some butter (margarine for those who don't do butter) and some salt and pepper, they have a flavor and texture that is pleasant, almost like the frozen green peas, and much less " beany and mealy " . As a kid, I hated all lima beans, since they came out of a can (with some kind of funky taste from the processing, I suppose, or from Mom boiling the heck out of the regular-sized lima beans. Sweet potatoes (from a can, as well) were the same way--starchy, mealy and generally nasty in taste and texture. I don't remember the first time I had gently-cooked frozen (green) baby lima beans, but I know I liked them pretty much from the get-go. When I was in nursing school (the old-fashioned, 3-year " hospital " nursing school), I would sometimes take my lunch at the hospital cafeteria. I was not doing " veg " back then at all, but when I felt a bit stressed, I would often choose a meal consisting of: boiled egg halves, green baby lima beans, steamed (it looked FRESH) spinach, and maybe add a " scoop " serving of cottage cheese. For some reason, those meals seemed more satisfying and fortifying than the binge-on-junk-food meals that I also sometimes had. I was noshing on one of those lima beans, spinach and boiled eggs meal the day I got my very first actual love letter from my (up to that moment) " sort-of " boyfriend. I sat at the cafeteria table and read my dorm mail--and this delightful letter. (The " pen-pal boyfriend " is now my dear husband of nearly 32 years! We've been very happy--funny that I can still remember what I ATE on that day, and it was LIMA BEANS!) You are right, Audrey, I think lima beans do get kind of tasteless if they are boiled too much or if dried ones are not seasoned well. Kind of starchy and non-descript. I like my stuff well-seasoned, so maybe that has helped me acquire a taste for the larger ones. I still recommend the frozen baby (green) limas. As long as they aren't all freezer-dried, they usually taste pretty good. If you've ever tried the frozen shelled edamame (edible green soybeans), I think the taste/texture of frozen green baby limas is very similar to that, and it's pretty tasty! Guest guest
Thanks for your lima story Laura, I love baby limas, but only the fozen kind, and maybe the dried, never tried them, hate the canned. THis proves my theory, do not force a kid to eat what they don't like and they may like it someday. ) on my limas I put a glob of melted smart balance and sprinkle some yeast flakes and lemon juice. ) blessings, Chanda
