Guest guest
Hi Mike, welcome to the garden! I've been a lacto-ovo (eggs and cheese) vegetarian for 23 plus years and still have the occasional urge for bacon. Not steak or lobster but baaaaaaaaaacon. You know the commercial with the dog who smells bacon and runs through the house for the Beggin Strips? I so relate to that dog. But honestly, the cravings do diminish in time. To control my bacon craving all I have to do is rub my fingers over my husband's scar from his quadruple bypass. There are some great veggie recipes in the files. I particularly like the veggie burgers made with black beans. A good craving food is something that involves a lot of chewing and flavors to appease the chewing monster. A multi layer dip with corn chips or raw veggie and dip is a good one. You're going to find some folks are resistant to your choice and do what they can to bulldoze you. My late mother in law used to hide meat in everything. You may have to make changes when going to a fast food place, especially if all you can find is fries, cole slaw and salad. Ugh. We were taken to Red Lobster last weekend and ended up with the salad which came dripping with about a cup of salad dressing. *turns green* Be careful reading labels, as there is a lot of meat stuff hidden in foods you wouldn't expect to have meat and meat products hiding. TVP stands for textured vegetable protein and I've used it for longer than I've been vegetarian. It comes in a lot of flavors and even textures and it is found in a lot of meat products (it's cheap), so you've probably already eaten it. If you go the TVP route, try it first in highly flavored things like chili. So glad you're turning to the green side! Guest guest
I'm still new at this and have been making changes much as you describe....the family isn't as dedicated, but are open to trying more meatless meals, as long as they're flavorful! It's a gradual thing for sure. I love cheese and just can't wrap my tastebuds around the veg ones (don't know if I ever will)...and still enjoy eggs. Dairy I can live without, too much doesn't agree with me I've found and fortunately I love Silk or almond milk on cereal etc. My teen daughter has many " vegetarian " friends who have no clue what that really means, they think it just means " I don't eat meat " . I have fun introducing them to things they've never had (like chocolate Silk, baked tofu and Tofutti cream cheese on bagels!). I even used chicken broth or beef broth at first to still have that familiar flavor. Pretty soon it was 3 times a week and then meat only on weekends. After a while both of my kids and I lost our taste for meat. That was about 15 years ago. I rarely have meat substitutes, like veggie burgers, TVP, etc, now. I no longer feel that I must have a meat substitute as the center of the meal. I have a much more varied diet now. I still consume eggs and dairy but am eating less of those now. I never buy milk and have been very happy with soy milk for 10 years or so. I am sure that within another year or 2 that I have transitioned to a vegan diet.>
Guest guest
Just be sure that you are getting enough protein. Most omnivores eat way more protein than they need so you may need to eat quite a bit of protein than you really to get through that process. Just be glad you are not craving nicotine :-) Good Luck Kathleen Ive also got a question:What can I do when I get these urges to pig out on meat?...Every so often this happens to me,its like Im a junkie suferring withdrawals.Anybody out there got any advice
