Guest guest
Stinging nettles have fine spines on the stems. I do not recall if they extend to the leaves themselves. The spines are made erect by water pressure from within. Cooking them (boiling, and I presume steaming) makes the spines collapse, rendering them harmless. This I learned from my wild edible plants class some years ago, and ate some then. I do not believe that the stems are problematic for eating, cooked this way, but one could always just snip off the leaves and leave the stalks. Wear gloves, no?-or for sure handle carefully, like cutting the stem at the base and placing into a bag or basket washing them off being held by metal pincers, cutting with scissors into workable bits, until they are boiled, steamed or fried. Taste okay, not bitter. Mark
