Guest guest
Quinoa cooks fast, I have tossed it in the rice cooker b ut not the PC. I don't know anything about the older models of PC's mine has 2 safety locks. I was always terrified of them blowing up and sending me to the moon. See if you can download instructions, if it's old you need to use it carefully. I just bought an older (1946) weighted pressure cooker yesterday. I can't find instructions for cooking quinoa in it. Have you ever done this? Guest guest
Why would you want to cook quinoa in a pressure cooker. It only takes 15 or 20 minutes to cook it from the grain state? I don't know about the new pressure cookers but I don't think grains like quinoa, millet or amaranth would do well in a pressure cooker. These grains are so small that they will probably get caught in the vent that is on top of the lid. A good alternative is too cook several cups of the grain ahead of time, freeze it in serving amounts that you would normally use, then when you need it, you can put it in a strainer, run hot water over it and it is thawed and ready to use within a few minutes. I have done this with brown rice, quinoa, whole barley groats, and whole oat groats, and other grains for 35 years. It makes cooking in a hurry so much easier to cook ahead and freeze things like this that can be thawed quickly to add to a meal. Nancy C. Guest guest
Also, a side note to my previous post on this....I have never seen instructions on cooking quinoa in an old pressure cooker.... and I have 3 older pressure cookers from the 30's, 40's and 50's. Quinoa has only been available in the United States for about the last 20 years and only been commonly found....that is fairly easy to find, for the last 10 years maybe. The first time I found quinoa was in Snowmass, Colorado in 1987 and it was considered a " new " grain.....of course, it wasn't " new " in the sense that it had not been grown before, it is considered an " ancient " grain from all I have read about it, but it was newly being grown again. Again, quinoa will probably stop up the vent on a pressure cooker because it is such a small grain and froths and bubbles. That would be very dangerous. Nancy C. Guest guest
It did come with the original 1946 manual. I've been reading up on pressure cookers for almost a year now and knew exactly what I wanted-weighted, not gauge, etc. You are right, quinoa cooks so fast I won't worry about it. I will be careful with it. My mom has had glass baking pans explode resulting in 7 layer bars all over the ceiling (they are now called exploding cookies in our house), so I am always very careful of possible explosions in the kitchen!
