Guest guest
Thank you!You all make me feel better! My husband and kids are very supportive and even like to try some of the things I make. I know change is scary but really what is the big deal over not eating meat? ---- Audrey Snyder 3/20/2009 9:35:45 AM Debbie - support from non-vegs I've been through this with my mom and sister, Debbie, and that's the question I asked them. You have plenty of support here! Mom said she thought it would be hard to cook for me. Well, I'm an adult and I don't live with her, so that's not a huge issue. At holidays, I eat the sides and make my own gravy -- and bring a dish or two to share, which I probably would do anyway, since I like to cook. My mom has gotten to where she only rolls her eyes when I comment that I don't do marshmallows, for example. But she has become interested in hearing me talk about the new recipes I've tried, and makes suggestions that do not include gelatin or meat fat or broth. When anybody challenges me directly, my standard answer is " I don't give a damn what you eat or don't eat. " (and a sweet smile) And then I change the subject. My sister started out making rude comments, and telling everyone in the vicinity that " Audrey doesn't eat meat " in a snotty tone, etc. But the last time I went to visit her, she made a point of buying free-range eggs for me, since she had heard me mention that's all I buy now. My dad has been great -- he is very strict about his cholesterol intake (he lowered it a bunch just by changing his diet, and hasn't had to go on medication!) so he often orders the same thing I do at a restaurant, and it hasn't been hard to encourage him to try some of the meat substitutes, especially veggie breakfast sausages, hot dogs, and black bean burgers! My aunt is great, she's been vegetarian for 10+ years, and I used to call her a lot to complain about mom and my sister. Her answer was pretty much the same as mine, but she adds that she's 56, has high cholesterol in the family, and hers is so low the doctor was extremely impressed! So there! Feel free to complain to us, Debbie -- then you don't take it out on dad. Audrey S. On Thu, Mar 19, 2009 at 10:48 PM, Debbie <stinkybeans wrote: > I like how you expressed your thoughts.
