Hi Jammi,

I remember seeing a show along these lines a little over a year ago. I think it

was on the Food Network. Each week a different show was on. The series was

studies on specific foods and how they affect our bodies. One week there was a

study in England on tomatoes. The people who participated in the study were all

very fair skinned. The scientists first shone a UV spotlight on their back to

simulate the effect of the sun. The participants were all burned to varying

degrees. Then they shone a black light I think on their backs and photographed

it with a special camera. They also photographed other parts of their bodies,

their face and shoulders. The photographs showed patterning (sun damage) beneath

the skin that would not show up on the skin surface until people were older. The

patterning was caused by sunburning. Then each participant had to eat 3 ounces

of tomato paste per day. They were provided with some recipes for making dip and

other snacks with it. I remember one lady spread it on crackers and ate it. The

study was long, it took place over six months I think. Then at the end of the

study they went back in for the same tests and to have another set of

photographs taken. The photographs showed that the skin was repairing itself

beneath the surface, and when they did the test where they shone an intense

small spot light on their back for a specified amount of time, none of the

people in the study burned. It was pretty amazing.

I remember that the next study they did was on red wine and it's affect on the

body. They compared it to other types of alcohol including white wine, they they

compared it to water and grape juice, both white and red. This series was

fascinating.

Thank you for reminding me about this.
