Guest guest
I'll bet it would be great in your cabbage casserole. When you use it in things like that, do you use any vegetarian beef flavoring? I have some beef-flavored veggie boullion cubes that I dissolve in the water for reconstituting the TVP before adding taco seasoning. It makes it salty, though -- Judy, one of the moderators, suggested the McKay's beef-like seasoning. I have the chicken-like seasoning and love it, but have not had a chance to get over to the hospital food shop (the hospital across the street from me is Seventh Day Adventist, their food shop is tiny but packed with good stuff). The chicken-like seasoning is not nearly as salty as the veggie chicken-type flavored boullion cubes I bought somewhere else. The texture of my TVP tacos is very similar to Taco Bell's taco meat, so I sure wouldn't be surprised if they used it! Somebody suggested pan frying it a little before adding taco seasoning, I guess to make it a firmer texture -- but it stuck all over my frying pan and made a big mess. And I like it without! Good luck on your cabbage casserole! Audrey S.
Guest guest
I've been reading the comments about frying it first and also flavoring it, I've only tried it in tomato based recipes, so not too much flavoring really needed as it sucks up the tomato. But I'm going to look for the McKay's seasoning and try that with this recipe. Lucky for you that food shop is close by! The closest Whole Foods is about 20-25 mins so I have to plan (although the local stores have quite a bit of organic etc items now). I'll let you know how it comes out!
