Guest guest
I know this maybe sounds weird, but I am curious and I gotta ask about it! It's edible weed question time again! I just went outside to survey my small backyard and noticed all the dandelions popping up everywhere. (To the lawn purists, my apologies--we don't have our yards " treated " because the chemicals used most often seem to affect my health. " Green " lawn care practices and products are almost non-existent out here in the " stuck-in-the-pre-DDT-days-mindset " of the rural midwest!) WE haven't treated OUR lawns since we moved here 6 years ago, so anything that's " on " the grass (and the weeds that I admit we have) out there is very negligible. Anyway, I noticed all the yellow dandelion flower heads and wondered, " Are these edible? " Does anyone know if the flower heads of dandelion plants can be eaten safely? Are they poison? Are they bitter? Could they be stir-fried or steamed or boiled? If they are safe to eat and don't taste horrible and have some actual nutrition in them, I think I have a cool free food source out there in my yard! My maternal grandmother always made a point to gather " new " dandelion greens for at least a few weeks in the spring--and then it tapered off, because she said the older plants became too bitter to be tasty as food. They also get pretty tough, because I've tried eating the " larger, older " plant leaves a few times. It's good for an experiment, but the taste thing isn't all that appealing. But I was wondering what the flower heads are like. Does anyone here have any experience with these or any info to pass along? Thanks! Wishing you-all a great week ahead! --Laura B., in Illinois
