Re:- funny names for foods

I (privately) called broccoli spears " trees " --why not?  They DID look like trees

to me...and at first, I only liked to eat the " leaves " off the trees.  My mom

would chop carrots (or, please

excuse me!--hotdogs) into small. round slices and call them " pennies " .  I liked

carrot pennies, although at the time, Mom usually COOKED them, and they were

sort of musy and over-cooked.

I think my Mom liked making up names for foods, even though her cooking hasn't

been

super-exciting...I also remember her making " baby pancakes " (very small, " silver

dollar " sized ones) and other pancakes that were variously and oddly-shaped.  It

was sort of like

cloud-gazing: we'd look at one of her " fun " pancakes and decide what animal or

object it

looked most like--then, perhaps, we'd be enticed to eat the pancake.  I

remember, at one

time, both my brother and I were fairly picky eaters and Mom would tell us all

kinds of things thinking unusual names for food would make the food more

interesting to us.  Hmmm!

Two foods that Mom could not dress up enough or make palateable, it seemed, were

eggs and m**t...and sometimes milk.  I did NOT like most m**t and could not get

any kind of appetite for eggs.  At about the age of 5, I remember not wanting to

drink milk--it tasted funny to me, and still does.  I did learn to like eggs,

however, when I got on my own and

could cook them myself--I like MUCH more seasonings in foods than my mom (or

even my

more food-savvy dad) ever did or do.  I still love cheeses, yogurt and such, but

still can't stand milk.  Well, maybe I was smarter as a kid than I

realized...but my Dad would have

fits over my not wanting to eat that " expensive " m**t that he loved to pile on

my plate and set before me!  (Ah, memories!)

Hey!  It's RAINING today (4th of July) here in Illinois!  I am supposed to go to

the city park at noon today and help " judge " cakes and/or pies for a " contest "

there.  The Kiwanis or

the Rotary Club in our town uses this as a fund-raiser for some youth programs

they sponsor. The cakes and pies later are  " auctioned " after the best and all

the runners-up are chosen by the " judges " .  It's a lot of fun, but I hope they

have some rain protection if they are still going to hold the activity!

To all of you in the U.S.--Happy Independence Day!

To all of you outside the " States " , have a pleasant weekend!
