I have wondered about ways that So. Cal. and Florida are similar and different.

Bugs must be a huge difference. Donna, do you have lizards or ants? I used to

think it weird how my Ohio cousins would LOVE catching lizards and try to keep

them as pets.

I've never been tremendously overrun with slugs, but I've also always had

chickens and geese and they do take care of a multitude of pests. (Now if I

could just convince the shrews that my living room is not the place for them

I'll be all set). I have to say though there's nothing worse than stepping

on a slug barefoot! The goo doesn't wipe off like poop or mud, it doesn't

even come off in just plain water - you have to use soap, and I generally

don't keep that outside. Yuck!

Donna, slugs like damp - LA doesn't strike me as damp - that's probably why

you don't have a problem with slugs.

Earwigs - http://ohioline. osu.edu/hyg- fact/2000/ 2068.html - There a whole

different thing, but essential for breaking things down. Where I live, we

have too many trees, and because we have too many trees we have too many

stumps and logs and branches and stuff littering the ground. Earwigs take

care of that. I leave earwigs alone, or move them to a mushy log where

they'll be happy to live out the rest of their days.
