Makes great enchiladas too. But, yes, you do need to add your own

seasoning - it's like tofu in that sense.

I did notice that it is very bland and I had to add more taco seasoning than

I used to add to ground beef. But I only had to use my microwave to

reconstitute it, so my kitchen is still nice and cool and I had a great

supper! (and anything that is safe for the parrots, they get to try to --

they approved! but maybe it was the cheese, which is only a very rarely

treat for them!)

Never would have thought those weird-looking little crumbles would make such

great food if it wasn't for this group! Thanks! :)

TVP is also great added to chili, you have to season it as well.

Textured Vegetable Protein. It is high in protein, low in fat, completely

vegetarian. (made of soy flour.) Good stuff and a lot cheaper than buying meat,

if you're still eating meat or have folks in the household who don't want to

change over to veggie. (Don't ask, don't tell.)

It comes in a number of different flavors and in more than just the crumble

texture. There are many places to find it online, in sizes from just a couple of

ounces to buckets of 25-50 pounds.

When you're first trying it, I'd suggest starting off with it in spicy dishes

like tacos and chili. Do try it!

And the stuff I bought says ZERO fat (since it's " de-fatted soy flour " I'm

not sure if it is all completely fat free or not), 12 g protein per serving,

which is pretty darn good! 4 g fiber, and of course no cholesterol. I bought

the Bob's Red Mill brand b/c it was in my grocery store health food section

and because it was a small bag, I didn't want to buy much if I didn't like

it.

But it has absolutely no flavor of its own, I tried a little before adding

my taco seasoning. It doesn't have a weird " after taste " or " under-taste "

like tofu does (to me) though. I don't really care for tofu. :( Anyway, for

the TVP, next time I think I'll put some onion in with the water while I

re-constitute it. Also -- forgot I can use vegetable broth to re-constitute

it -- that would probably give it some flavor as well as onion powder,

garlic powder, taco or chili seasoning, etc.

Audrey,

Try reconstituting it with some of the McKay's vegetarian Beef style seasoning

added to the water. After it is reconstituted, brown it in a little oil in the

frying pan. and then make up the Taco Seasoning according to the mixture

instructions and add to the brown TVP. Great in Taco's, chili, and Burritos,

etc.

Oh, that's a good idea! Thanks, Judy -- I'll try that. Need to get some of

the beef style seasoning, I haven't tried it yet (just the chicken-style).
